Machinima Editorial, Production Teams Hit by Layoffs
According to reports coming in from Twitter, at least 20 Machinima.com employees were laid off today, with the termination being immediate.
The layoffs seem to be focused on the editorial team, which runs the Inside Gaming Daily blog, as well as the production team. Several blog team members have confirmed the layoffs via Twitter, including Editorial Manager Billy Shibley. Earlier today, Billy tweeted: “I just found out I am no longer employed. Should probably update that LinkedIn profile.” Similar tweets have come in from Justin Fassino and Matt Dannevik.
Joystiq just added to its report with a comment from Machinima Editor-in-Chief Rob Smith. ”This is growing pains. Machinima has grown a lot in a short amount of time. We had to look at the business, look at where we’re focusing. It has hit the editorial group, but we are still doing editorial coverage in a slightly different way.”
We are used to seeing layoffs in game development and distribution, but cutbacks in games editorial are comparatively rare. Furthermore, layoffs around the holidays are especially saddening, but sources within the company have confirmed a silver lining: Machinima is paying those affected by the layoffs through the end of the year, along with varying degrees of severance pay going into 2013.
We will update this post as more news comes in.
UPDATE: Machinima has released the following statement regarding the layoffs: “Today Machinima underwent a reorganization to address its global growth, and this process unfortunately resulted in layoffs. Less than 10% of Machinima’s workforce was effected. Also as part of the restructure Machinima is hiring across key divisions including Sales, Marketing and Product.”
