Madden 12 Acknowledges That Concussions Suck
I was once an athlete. Yes, it’s true. I played basketball until ninth grade. I had little talent, but I was tall, and so I was in the kind of situation where every adult I met would be like, “Oh, do you play ball? I bet you’d be good because you’re tall.” And so I played ball. I made up for my lack of talent by playing like a crazy motherf–ker. Occasionally I’d headbutt somebody.
So I had some concussions. Now I have epilepsy. So, yeah, getting over a concussion isn’t just a matter of “clearing out the cobwebs,” as TV commentators like to say. They’re the real deal. And Madden NFL 12 is going to make note of that. Or at least NFLPA assistant executive director of external affairs George Atallah seems to think so.
“Good for EA Sports. Concussed players in NFL Madden prevented from returning to play. Culture change is important,” Atallah tweeted.
In the actual NFL, there’s a rule that prevents concussed players from getting back into the action until they’ve been approved by a doctor. Sounds like EA Sports is instituting a similar rule in the game, with the CPU taking the place of the doctor. Good for EA Sports, indeed, if this helps increase concussion awareness among fans.
