There have been many crazy plays in football. The Immaculate Reception, The Play, The Catch, and so many others. Yet to my knowledge, there has only been one that made John Madden himself think, “That man is playing a video game.”

Other plays may have been crazy in the outcome, but this one was crazy in both its execution and the fact that it was even attempted. Here is the Saints’ onside kick to start the 2nd half in last year’s Super Bowl.

I personally think that one of the greatest football plays would definitely go to Dante Hall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVZQY-U_2jE&feature=related

I picked this video because of how he maneuvered out of the clashes and tumbles that came in his path. Hands down , that was one of the strongest play in the decade.

Drew

On August 6, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Everyone knows the Immaculate Reception shouldn’t count because nobody knows if he even caught it.

What did I pick? The Gun Slinger’s return to legendary status as the Vikings were down 4 on MNF, 12sec to go, a deep pass to Greg Lewis in the end zone, and he manages to keep the feet in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un3B7Og-FS0

Seriously. How are you going to deny that this is the craziest/greatest play ever? Favre was counted out time and time again, yet he’s able to do like this. Pick your jaw up off the floor, son.

Has to be David Tyree’s helmet catch. Greatest play from someone you’d least expect to make that kind of play, or any play for that matter. Tyree hadn’t done much all year, and in biggest game, at the greatest Super Bowl game ever, The (My) Giants pull off the upset. Props go to Plax for the go-ahead touchdown, but without Manning keeping his body upright, the ref not blowing the wistle, and David Tyree making the catch against the undefeated Pats best DB, hands down is the greatest crazy football play ever. If not for what it meant to beat the Pats, then just for how exciting it was when it happened.

7 seconds to go, down 7, 75 yards to go. Saints against Jaguars.

A completed pass about 25 yards downfield, 3 laterals later, and a great block by the Saints QB who ran all the way downfield after throwing the pass and the Saints score a touchdown with 0:00 on the clock. 1 point game, all they have to do now is make the XP to send it to OT, and John Carney pushes it wide, all-time great NFL play and all for not because the kicker can’t make an extra point.

The craziest thing that I ever seen was when Lawrence Taylor sacked Joe Theismann and just destroyed Joe’s leg. It was incredible. Not only was it a gruesome hit, but the fracture also led to Joe’s leg being shorter than the other, as well as Joe’s retirement. It is one of the most devastating hits I have ever seen and one of the most memorable injuries in NFL history. Just look at that leg bend.

I would also have to go with the 15 lateral passes. The main reason is because I have never, and probably will never see such a feat happen again.

The best play is not about the upsets, but about the play itself. The fact that they pulled off 15 successful lateral passes without an interception, then getting a touchdown is remarkable.

I choose Ian Johnson scoring on the Statue of Liberty to beat Oklahoma not only because it was the greatest game I had ever seen live(on TV), it was one of the greatest comebacks ever, and it was on of the greatest David beats Goliath bowl games in recent memory.

The main reason I choose it for Craziest play ever is because Ian Johnson goes directly from scoring the winning 2 point conversion to proposing to his girlfriend on National TV.

I skimmed the posts and I didn’t see this one posted yet. Let me tell you about the Music City Miracle and why it is one of the craziest plays ever.

The Titans, newly moved into the Coliseum, had fought their way all the way to the Wildcard spot in the playoffs. The game was largely a defensive match, with the score 16-15 Bills by the time the clocked stopped at 16 seconds. The Titans, now known for it’s special team trickery, went deep into their playbook and selected “Homerun Throwback.” Before the players even ran to their positions, things were dicey.

First of all, the player that practiced this play week in and week out, Derrick Mason, was injured. Kevin Dyson (who we stupidly picked BEFORE Randy Moss in the draft that year), a rookie, stepped in on a play he had never practiced.

Second of all, the play was designed for one player to catch and pass the ball across the field to Dyson. Lorenzo Neal (the first guy to touch the ball) has stated in interviews after that he told Frank Wycheck (the guy who actually threw the ball) that, “I’m not going to throw the bleeping ball.” Lorenzo apparently had a terrible arm.

So the Titans line up and the kicker…kicked. The ball didn’t go far and it began to come down amidst a group of blockers. To L. Neal’s horror, the ball decided to come to him. He catches and laterals back to Frank Wycheck, who then has a split second to throw the ball laterally back ACROSS the field to Dyson, who was waiting with a line of blockers in front of him. He makes the throw, Dyson dashes down the sideline untouched.

But it wasn’t over then. I believe it was the first year that the NFL ever used instant replay to overturn calls. As the celebration died down, the ref went to the ‘booth’ to review the play. The Music City Miracle will always be a matter of inches. There are folks today that see the ball going forward, and will argue that it was a forward pass. Most of those guys are Bills fans though. The rest? We see a ball that went from Wycheck’s right hand at the 25.025 yard line to Dyson, who caught it at the 25 yard line, and then used the speed God gave him to eventually send the Titans on a collision course with the St. Louis Rams.

You rarely see these plays in games that matter. It this one instant we see an entire special teams unit coalesce into one willful and focused whole. In the end it was the perfect play, executed by the perfect players, during a time in the game where only perfection mattered.

alot of the more famous crazy plays have already been posted.

in my opinion though this reverse lateral by randy moss at the end of halftime where he is being tackled by 2 people and throws it behind his head is one of the craziest plays ive ever seen. he had no chance to score and the clock was at zero, so he did the only thing possible to get his team some points.

Boston Eagles vs Miami Hurricanes
Surprised I didn’t see this and didn’t want to repeat so this one would be my pick for “craziest football play of all time” because this game was nationally televised on CBS the day after Thanksgiving thus giving it a huge if not massive audience to say the least and making the craziness ever so… more crazy… Also, the football was thrown at least 63 yards against 30mph winds after already having to throw the football 45 times during the game, Doug Flutie, the quarterback, threw the football one last time and was caught by Gerard Phelan ending the game for the defending national champions, the Miami Hurricanes . This game was the epiphany of a Heisman trophy season for Flutie, later playing in the USFL , NFL, and the CFL and later being elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. This was truly a “Hail Mary” or should a say.. a “Hail Flutie” moment in football that will more or likely never ever ever be repeated again …

It doesn’t involve innumerable laterals, nor does it involve a long hail mary. It isn’t a display of superior athleticism or elusiiveness, and it didn’t come in the waning seconds of the game. However, what it does show is the true heart of a champion. John Elway’s teams had a habit of falling short in the big game. From Cal’s impossible touchdown in “The Big Game” to the Broncos losing 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, Elway seemed destined to retire without being a world champion. In 1998, a 37-year-old John Elway would again take the helm of Denver in Super Bowl XXXII. Despite a lackluster performance through the air, Elway left his mark on the history of the game with a single play. Late in the third quarter, game tied at 17, the Broncos faced a third down. Seeing the defense, Elway decided to run the ball. Nearing the first down marker, he saw defenders bearing down on him, but instead of sliding and hoping for a favorable spot, the weathered veteran quarterback threw caution to the wind and took to the air. Despite the hit that followed, Elway got his first down and showed the world his desire to win his title. Years of repeated shortcomings would finally be lifted from his back at the conclusion of the game, but his dive will forever be remembered as one of the defining moments of his career and a testament to his desire to win. This play not only exemplifies Elway, but it epitomizes the joy and passion fans of the game put into their team and this sport.

Without question, this is simultaneously the craziest play and greatest catch of all-time! Monday Night Football. The legendary Brett Favre in his prime (this game was played on Nov. 6, 2000). A foggy & rainy Lambeau Field. Overtime versus the hated rival Vikings. And a spectacular, borderline impossible catch courtesy of Antonio Freeman, who also had the presence of mind to get up and score a touchdown, ending the game in victory for the Packers. Mindblowing.
