Magicka: Wizard Wars Alpha Free for Mount & Blade Owners

A few months back, the folks at Paradox did a Reddit AMA where they revealed they will not be the publisher on Taleworlds upcoming action RPG Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlords.

They made it official today with a post on the Paradox forum, noting that as of midnight, Mount & Blade is now completely in Taleworlds’ hands.

“It’s been five and a half years since Mount and Blade was released, five and a half years of sieges, tournaments and pitched open-field battles, and of course, the odd expansion or two!” Paradox stated. “We feel honored to have fought beside you and at our final parting of ways would bid our farewells with a gift which has automatically been added to your Steam library.”

By “your” Paradox means all of us. That is, if you own a Mount & Blade game on Steam. If so, Paradox has added the Magicka: Wizard Wars early access alpha to your collection and you’re now welcome to dive into the spell-casting battle.

I asked Paradox why they won’t be publishing Bannerlords, and while they declined to go into any details, they simply said the publishing agreement between the two parties had expired.

Well that explains a lot! Since the game just mysteriously appeared in my account without so much as a hint or fanfare, I started digging around like mad through my Steam account history to find out where I got it from — especially since I had apparently gotten a free copy of Rome: Total War from GreenManGaming when I had no idea it was part of the offer.

It’s weird to be in a state where games are just mysteriously appearing in your account. Sort of makes you afraid that you’re buying games in your sleep. At least it’s a good thing I redeemed my copy of M&B on Steam ages ago, since a free game never hurt anyone (although I heard a rumour that it made a few hamsters terribly distressed).

Will this be in your account after the alpha?
