Major Layoffs at Sony Online Entertainment

George Broussard recently tweeted that Sony Online Entertainment Seattle will be seeing layoffs and that studio closure is a possibility. However, Broussard is best known for his 12+ year development of Duke Nukem Forever, so you’ll forgive me if I remain skeptical.

Thankfully, Kotaku has learned through an undisclosed source that closures will affect SOE’s studios in Seattle, Tucson, and Denver. Allegedly, half of the workforce at SOE offices in Austin, Texas has been laid off, as well as a significant portion of employees in San Diego. This amounts to nearly one-third of SOE’s staff being canned in one fell swoop. On top of all this, SOE has cancelled its spy MMOS The Agency in order to free up the survivors to keep everything else going.

Bummer.

SOE has great IPs with great graphics. They just have poor game mechanics. A lot of game companies are like this too though. Look at Star Trek Online…
