Marathon: Durandal Now Available on Xbox Live Arcade

Marathon: Durandal hit Xbox Live Arcade today for the tidy sum of 800 points. This classic title was first sequel in the Marathon series of games from Bungie Software. Bungie has gone back and remixed the entire experience with new graphics, new controls, and online play. While this all sounds really nice on paper, the end-result ends up being a bit lukewarm.

For my part, I had never heard of Marathon until Bungie started doing updates to the series. Most of these classic titles hold their value only to those that loved them in the past. That criteria not meeting my own experiences, I had to take the game at face value.

The first thing you recognize is how familiar it all seems. This game was the heir-apparent to Halo, and small glimpses of that can be seen throughout. From the art direction, to the environments, it’s easy to see how it all lead up to Master Chief.

So download it already. One of the greatest aspects of this generation is the ability to “try before you buy”. You may need to clear some space however. At 140 or so megs, this title ends up being one of the largest on Live Arcade at the moment, and the updated soundtrack may be the culprit.
