Mario Is Fat Because…

Nintendo does these “Iwata Asks” things where Nintendo folks talk about Nintendo stuff, and in one session about Steel Diver for the 3DS, Mario crator Shigeru Miyamoto sorta randomly explains one of life’s greatest non-mysteries: why is Mario shaped the way he is?

The reason Mario is a plump shape is because gaming devices at that time could only read collisions between square boxes, not because I wanted to make him cute. His design turned out like that because I adjusted for the capabilities of the gaming device of the day. For example, resolution was low, so I made his face big. But today’s game consoles can handle collisions with round or irregular shapes.

I call this a non-mystery just because I never ever wondered about this, but it’s cool nonetheless to me as a student of video games. Now, Miyamoto-san, explain this.
