Mass Effect 3 Follow Up: Drew Karpyshyn “Completely Focused” On The Old Republic

Last week we brought news, via a nonchalant tweet from BioWare’s Casey Hudson, that Drew Karpyshyn, lead writer on Mass Effect and co-lead on Mass Effect 2, wouldn’t be sharing lead writing duties for part 3. Hudson’s tweet – was vague, leaving open the possibility that Karpyshyn might still be involved in some capacity.

We found this less than clear, so we reached out to BioWare for further comment. Today we received the following response:

“Drew is completely focused on Star Wars: The Old Republic at this time.”

That seems to settle the question of Drew’s involvement in ME3 – none. Mac Walters is the guy on that game. But this leaves some big questions, namely how much of Mass Effect 3′s story builds off of Drew’s work, and whether or not, as is widely believed, Drew outlined the entire story from the get go. It’s not automatically a bad thing that the lead and co-lead on the previous games has moved on, but it does make us a lot more interested in knowing how that affects the story. Believe it or not, we’re not letting this one lay unanswered and have reached out for more information. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we get it.

So Drew builds upon this fantastic series for more than 4 years, then suddenly decides to pull out and let some other bozo come in and f–k up his legacy? Who does he think he is, George Bush Senior?

Uh, did he get in trouble for harassing a Mass Effect coworker or something?

Nah, I bet he thought that moving to take lead on a project with lots of potential growth is a good idea compared to sticking around for a soon-to-end game series. I think this will be a bad idea, and that TOR will tank.

I believe that ME3 will still be awesome without Karpyshyn but I do find it odd that he isn’t involved in the final game. I guess we won’t know until we play ME3 what negative affect, if any, this will have on the story.
