Mass Effect 3: How To Find All Squad Members

Shepard can’t fight the invasion of Earth alone, he’s going to need some back-up. While the squad count is reduced in Mass Effect 3, the ways in which they react to the world, to each other, and to previous events with the File Transfer system, has been greatly expanded. Learn which characters return as full combat squad mates below, and spot a handful of special new additions to the group.

SPOILER WARNING: Major Mass Effect 3 Spoilers!

Note: Many of the character appearances are dependent on character transfer. On default settings, none of the squad members below will default to dying in the Suicide Mission.

Squad Members Available

  • Ashley Williams: Only recruitable if she survives the mission on Virmire in Mass Effect 1. Kaidan or Ashley, one or the other, will always die during this mission, only one will ever survive. Appears early in the game after the intro and on the first major mission. You’ll be allowed to choose between Ashley Williams and Kaidan if you did not transfer at the beginning of the game.
  • Kaidan Alenko: Only recruitable if he survives the mission on Virmire in Mass Effect 1. Kaidan or Ashley, one or the other, will always die during this mission, only one will ever survive. Appears early in the game after the intro and on the first major mission. You’ll be allowed to choose between Ashley Williams and Kaidan if you did not transfer at the beginning of the game.
  • James Vega: Recruited after the intro on the first major mission.
  • Liara T’Soni: The Asari and former team mate will always appear and join you during the Mars mission in ME3.
  • Tali’Zorah vas Normandy: Only appears if she survives the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2. If you don’t use the File Transfer System, Tali will appear in ME3 by default as having survived the Suicide Mission. Meet her later near the Quarrian Homeworld where she’s a required companion, if she survived.
  • Garrus Vakarian: Only appears if he survives the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2. If you don’t use the File Transfer System, Garrus will appear in ME3 by default as having survived the Suicide Mission. You’ll meet him early on in the campaign, leading a Task Force on the Turian Homeworld.
  • The Prothean: Only recruitable with the “From Ashes” DLC. The Prothean joins as a full squad member.
  • EDI: After your mission to the Turian Homeworld, but before you can leave, you’ll be able to recruit EDI as a squad member that helps you in combat. Yes, really!
