Massive EVE Online Battle Starts Over A Misclick

Some wars and battles are planned and executed with stunning and lethal precision. Others start because of a single mistake. The latest big fight in EVE Online – the Battle of Asakai – is in the latter category. One of the largest battles in years, it took place over the course of 8 hours, involved over 3000 players, and resulted in the loss of approximately 834 billion ISK worth of ships and materials (for reference, that’s close to $30,000).

It all started when a fleet commander for the ClusterFuck Coalition (CFC), Dabigredboat, tried to create a warp bridge (a way to fast travel for ships without warp capabilities) to Asakai using a very expensive capital ship. Unfortunately for him, he clicked on warp instead of bridge, and was thrust into a group of ships designed to keep him from escaping. Immediately after getting caught, a group of Pandemic Legion (PL) capital ships warped in, intent on taking the prize that their allies had snared. The call immediately went out to all CFC and PL allies to join the fight, and the Battle of Asakai began.

The battle ended in a rout and significant losses for the CFC, thanks to reinforcements called in by PL and some smart interdiction work. All told, a full tenth of EVE Online’s concurrency – a good portion of those fighting against the CFC – and 274 separate alliances were involved in the battle. You can check out a more detailed report, including interviews with notable commanders and strategists, over at The Mittani. Check the video below for the battle in action.

I’m downloading Eve right now. I’ve been hearing about it for a few years now. I think it is about time I try it.
