Master Chief Only a Supporting Character in Upcoming Halo Movie?
If you were going to make the Halo movie, which character would you make the story revolve around? If you said, “Master Chief,” then you are incorrect, sir. According to a recent interview with Joseph Staten, Bungie’s writing director and author of the book Contact Harvest, the current script has the infamous Spartan in more of a supporting role to the other characters.
“I think what it boiled down to with the film was really a question of “Who is the main character of the movie?” Is it the Master Chief or is it somebody else? And over time I think everybody around the table agreed that the Master Chief is best left as the most important supporting cast member.”
Staten also described the difficulty of having an entire film carried by a guy whose face is never seen. For now, it seems the Chief has been written as someone shrouded in mystery, but whom all the other characters look up to. It sounds kind of like the “Landfall” short video that was released a few months back, which was pretty awesome. Still, not having the main character of the games as the main character in the movie seems a little odd. I mean, that’s like making a Street Fighter movie and making it more about Guile than Ryu or Ken…oh.
