MechWarrior Online Will See Addition of 24-Player Battles, Metanarrative

The free-to-play mech simulator MechWarrior Online is currently in open beta, and is available for anyone to try out and play. Answering questions at the recent Game Developers Conference, the game’s developers at Piranha Games have stated that the game will exit open beta and be launched as a full retail title by late summer this year.

Speaking to Joystiq, the studio’s president Russ Bullock said that the game has no plans to implement a player-vs-AI model—a feature that was present in previous games in the MechWarrior series. According to Bullock, Piranha Games has no plans to visit the option, as their focus is presently on creating larger maps and bringing 12 vs 12 battles into the game.

In addition to larger battlefields, the studio is also planning to revamp the game’s user interface and add BattleTech lore into the game so players can pledge their allegiance to the various factions and partake in a meta-narrative.
