Metacritic Users Bomb Mass Effect 3 With Low Scores

If you’re relying on Metacritic scores to determine whether you should buy Mass Effect 3,

Across all three platforms, the average critic reviews are in the 90s, but the user ratings paint a very different picture. So bad are the reviews, that Metacritic has been removing user reviews that break terms of use for “trolling.” As of this writing, here are the average user scores:

Xbox 360: 4.7

PS3: 3.2

PC: 2.5

What could be causing this massive discrepancy? This isn’t the first time we’ve observed such drastic differences in user-versus-critic ratings.

Dragon Age 2: average critic score of 80 across all platforms.

User reviews:

Xbox 360: 4.4

PS3: 3.9

PC: 4.2

Modern Warfare 3: Average critic score of 85 across all platforms.

User reviews:

Xbox 360: 3.2

PS3: 2.9

PC: 2.1

Has it simply become hip to hate big, successful franchises? Is this a backlash of PC gamers against increasing consolization? Or are we just especially harsh critics of franchises we hold dear? Forbes seems to believe, in the case of Mass Effect 3, it has something to do with the homosexual romances, which strikes me as a bizarre theory to which I lend no credence.

Why do you think the ME3 user ratings are so low?

I don’t understand this at all. I’m about halfway through the game and have enjoyed every second of it.

It’s cause like America (and perhaps other places of the world), people are becoming extremely polarized over the smallest things.

They say ignorance is bliss…

This is just what people do now, apparently. I guess to some it’s fun to rate games low just because they’re popular, regardless of how good they actually are.

If I actually tried to understand why most people do the things they do I would have gone crazy by now.

well dragon age 2 was a complete disappointment after the first and the modern warfare series is silly at this point, little to no changes are made between releases but ME3 looked solid however if they got away from the player base by turning it into a shooter and ignoring the rpg aspect that would explain the debacle

@jack i don’t get it though, they brought in the heavy RPG elements as was done in the first mass effect, except much more polished. combat has some annoyances so far, when more than half the time, i roll instead of taking cover, but that may simply be an issue of getting used to.

MW3 and Dragon Age 2 both deserved the low ratings, but I have no idea why people are hating on ME3.

It mainly has to do with the endings. The endings were leaked well before the game came out. All the varying endings more or less lead to a similiar fate for shepherd and his crew. In the game no matter how much you prepare to fight the reapers, the end result for the normandy/shepherd is pretty bleak. Also for the ME3 universe there is a dark future ahead.

So yeah, people are up in arms that a game advertised as having your choices affect anything and everything, ends on three flavors of the same thing. Folks feel as all their playtime throughout the three games is thrown in the trash, and it crushes motivation to replay ME3.

Personally, I liked the endings, but I am in the minority (at least in terms of internet communities)

Here is a poll put up that reflects peoples views

The reason it is getting terrible reviews is because we were betrayed by bioware. The endings ruined the entire series for those of us that cared.

The reason it’s getting all those terrible reviews is because the endings were absolute crap.

The entire game is a friggin masterpiece I remember the exact spot where it all went wrong. You and Anderson sitting there looking at earth, it was ing epic, all they needed to do at that point is fire the weapon, it should just go off and finish off the reapers. In the end Shepard is dead there is a funeral, we get some epilogue that tells us what happened to the different races and teammates and your LI.

But no instead Bioware dreams up a Deus ex machina in the form of a god kid who bassically tells you “Chose one of three lame options” And all the options result in the same vague, dissapointing crappy cinematic that only changes slightly depending on your war rating, which doesn’t even make any sense.

They actually managed to make an ending that invalidates all of your choices you made up till then, it doesn’t matter that you saved the geth or the krogan or the rachni or anyone because in the end either all synthetic life is destroyed, everyone becomes a cyborg through space magic or you control all the reapers and die. All the mass relays are also destroyed so theres no more travel through the galaxy. And Joker with some of your squad that were with you on the planet magically appear to be running away and get stranded on some lame planet in the middle of nowhere.

Good ing job Bioware. Good ing job.
