File R-06: Badlands Showdown
The next section is a single boss fight, but it’s no push-over. The badlands arena is large, dotted with destructible boulders and crates. During the battle, refill your health by destroying the wooden crates scattered around. Each one contains a nanopaste item.
If you’re having trouble taking the boss on, there’s no shame in returning to previous levels to stock up on healing Repair Nanopaste. Playing through a previous level will help boost your BP and provide items. There’s no need to finish, just save with Courtney and return to the title screen once you’ve got the items.
BOSS: Jetsteam Sam
Sam doesn’t mess around. This is a pure battle with very few gimmicks. You’ll need to rely on carefully timed parries, and dodges to survive.
Like Monsoon, Sam loves knocking Raiden up into the air and kicking him back down. Watch for a glowing streak behind Sam as he prepares to swing upward. Parry, or air-parry to avoid extra damage.
While you’ll need to play defensively, it’s very difficult to manage a pure defense against Sam. Almost all of his attacks can be parried, but very few can be counter-parried. If you can manage to parry his four-hit combo, you can counter-parry and stun him for extra damage.
Parrying Sam’s combos can be tricky, he’ll switch up attacks and timing between attacks. Often, you won’t know what’s about to hit before it’s too late. If you’re not confident in your parrying skills, back off and dodge.
Watch for Sam when he stands still and grasps his sheathed sword. That means he’s about to use an unblockable sweep attack that strikes anything nearby as he slashes in every direction. Dodge backwards and wait.
Running away from Sam, he’ll use two longer ranged attacks. He’ll either lunge forward, or use a jumping kick. Both attacks are difficult to escape, you’ll need to parry or dodge to escape.
Things get trickier once Sam’s health is brought down. You’ll get a chance to knock the sword out of his hand in Blade Mode. Doing so will disarm Sam, and he’ll begin using a few new attacks.
Sam shows off his skills during this phase. He’ll try to grapple Raiden by charging at him from afar, but a simple parry will stop him.
His kick is slower than a slash, but will send Raiden flying backward.
One new ability you’ll need to watch out for is Sam’s new defensive grapple. Using a slide kick or jump kick, or any of Raiden’s lunge homing attacks will cause Sam to instantly grab Raiden and throw him. There’s no way to avoid this, just don’t use those types of attacks.
Do enough damage, and Sam will collect his sword for the final phase of the fight. The third round is similar to the first, but with a few new annoying abilities.
Sam can now throw boulders at Raiden. He’ll rarely use this ability, as Sam loves zipping close. The boulders can be destroyed in Blade Mode.
A more common attack is Sam’s new triple lunge attacks. He’ll always strike in three’s, and all three will hit or stun if you don’t parry or dodge. There’s no avoiding this one, they’ll damage you even if you’re on the ground.
An event will trigger once Sam’s health is below 10%. Follow the prompts, and use Blade Mode to strike Sam’s hand to complete this short chapter.
