Microsoft: 360 Lineup about Quality & Impact, not Quantity
The dearth of new 360 titles as of late may have a few gamers wondering, “What’s up, Microsoft?” Well, Microsoft has answered the question with a smooth, “Chill out, dawg. Quality over quantity.” I paraphrase, of course.
Microsoft corporate VP Phil Spencer said:
Creating core IP, as many first-and third-parties have seen over the years, isn’t an easy thing. I went through the process of creating Gears with Epic and I know the sweat, time, and effort that went into it. I also worked on things like Alan Wake, Too Human, Crackdown, and stuff that didn’t hit the same level of success, but had an equal amount of sweat equity and heart go into getting created.
Spencer went on to say that the 360′s lineup is about “quality and impact, not number of releases a year.”
That almost seems like a tacit admission that it’s safer to release another tired sequel rather than take a risk into an original idea. Unfortunately, the video game industry is a business, and that’s why the only risk-taking we see originates from indie developers.
