Microsoft Launches New Xbox 360 Beta for “an Updated Disc Format”

Usually when MS rolls out an Xbox 360 preview beta, it’s for something we know is coming, like the one that gave us the New Xbox Experience or the one that gave us Netflix streaming and Twitter and Facebook or the one that gave us ESPN. But this time I have no idea what’s going on.

This particular beta is intended to test out an “updated Xbox 360 disc format,” and participants will receive stuff in the mail that they’ll then stick in their DVD drives and allow it to do something or other. And everybody gets Halo: Reach. I’m not tech-savvy enough to speculate seriously about what this might be. Quad-layer DVDs? I really can’t even guess.

But I am able to speculate in more general terms; I would guess the new format will either be an anti-piracy measure or something higher capacity than the dual-layer DVDs they use now. If it’s the former, well, whatever. If it’s the latter, then it signals that Microsoft wants the 360 to be around for a long time yet. If it’s something else, then also whatever.

Sign up here, if you can. I don’t think it’s full, but the site is being screwy.

I smell a new anti-piracy implementation.

Just don’t make another D-minus effort and spin the disc in the opposite direction.
