Microsoft Reportedly Banning Avatar Guns from Xbox Live

This is going to be a disappointment for those of you who love to deck out your Xbox Live avatars with all kinds of violent-looking gear.

Though it’s unconfirmed by Microsoft, reports have it that the Xbox maker plans to ban gun-like Avatar items from Xbox Live in 2012. The tip comes from Epic Games Community Manager Will Kinsler, who says that Microsoft intends to hold back any additional sales of items for online Avatars that look like guns.

Kinsler says that players who have already purchased gun avatar items will be grandfathered in come 2012 — so you won’t lose that item you paid for, like a Gears of War 3 Lancer, just because Xbox Live is getting worried about giving virtual guns to children (which is what I personally believe this Avatar thing is all about). But once the new year hits, it sounds like you won’t be able to purchase any new Avatar items that could be threatening to others.

More PC stupidity. We’ll market the hell outta shoot’em up games to kids, let them dismember virtual enemies in the most grotesque fashion, yet we can’t allow the avatars to carry firearms?
