Microsoft’s Kinect Prediction: Will “Blow Away” iPad

It’s always fun to see how enthusiastic companies are about their new releases. Of course, it also sometimes means that you get some really, well, interesting comments.

A great example of this Microsoft’s upcoming Kinect launch. Obviously, everyone at MS is excited about it, and they want to tell us all about it. Sometimes though, I think they get a little carried away.

Take Kinect spokesman Kudo Tsunoda, for example. In an interview with Gamasutra, Tsunoda makes a prediction that may be juat a wee bit bold.

The preorders have been really strong. As far as what we’re looking at for Holiday, this is going to be stuff that’ll blow away any of the sales you’ve seen with iPad. The Xbox 360 is already selling better than the Wii and Sony right now. Kinect’s really just going to boost that to a whole new level.

Really? The iPad sold three million units in its first three months on the market. That’s an awfully high bar to shoot for, and not something I’d you think you wanted to make public.

In a recent Eurogamer interview, Phil Spencer of Microsoft echoed these sentiments, saying. “I think that’s an ambitious number. I would expect that we could at least do that.” That’s a far cry from saying you’re going to do it in three months, at least.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see Kinect doing as well as either of the MS folks predicts at launch. After all, this is a $150 device, and the market isn’t all that great right now. Couple that with a dearth of high-end or hardcore launch titles, and I think you have a recipe for lackluster sales here.

We’ll have to wait a bit to find out, but once Kinect launches on November 4, we’ll see how well it does.
