Mid! League of Legends Reveals New Team Builder
The League of Legends solo queue can be a wretched hive of scum and villainy. The griefing typically starts at the champion select screen, where multiple people want to play mid or solo top, and no one wants to support. Not exactly the best model for creating a balanced, friendly team.
Riot Games hopes to change that with a new team builder system in LoL that will allow players to select the champ, role, and position they want to play before being connected to a team. Riot made the announcement in the official League of Legends forums, with a simple stated goal: “bring players together and build better teams.”
“The current matchmaking does a good job of matching up players of similar overall skill levels, but doesn’t have any way to know what a player’s intentions for a given game are,” Riot states. “Sometimes things work out perfectly and everyone gets the champion and role they wanted without a hitch. But if multiple players are looking to play the same role or lane, a consensus has to be built in a relatively short period of time. That’s time that could be used to get to know each other, agree on a strategy and build confidence that it’s going to be a fun match.”
Riot notes that the new team builder system is also designed to improve matchmaking. A new “smarter” matchmaking system will dynamically account for a player’s experience with a given role, position and specific champion. The devs say the system will go a long way in ensuring a team faces similarly skilled players.
As an LoL player who spends most of my time in the solo queue, this is great news. Griefing often starts at the champ select screen, with hurt feelings carrying over to matches before they even begin. My only concern is how this will impact the length of time it takes to get into a match. This new system won’t change the fact that most people want to play mid or solo top and hardly anyone wants to support.
As for the impact it will have on the meta game, something Riot has repeatedly stated it doesn’t want to enforce through systems, players will actually be able to more easily try new strategies through the new team builder by clearly stating the unconventional role/character they want to play in a specific position.
No release date on the new team builder system yet beyond “the near future.”
