Minecraft on PC Hits 7 Million Copies Sold

It was only last week that it was revealed that Minecraft on the Xbox Live Arcade was selling about 17,000 units a day. Today, there’s even more intense sales news about the indie darling: on PC, the game has sold 7 million copies.

The information came by way of Twitter update from Mojang Business Development Director Daniel Kaplan, who dropped the 7 million figure.

So in addition to being an incredibly good seller on PC, the Xbox version of Minecraft has also notched quite a few sales — over 2 million, to make it the best-selling XBLA game ever. At a rate of 17,000 units per day, that’s about $340,000 daily that the game is earning for Mojang and its creator, Markus “Notch” Persson. Crazy.

Really does go to show that if you make a good game, graphics and DLC are all meaningless in the long run.

EA and Activision could learn something from our indie lords.

Now, this is cool. But it’s incorrect. They have not sold 7 million copies. They’ve had 7 Million people register for Minecraft. There’s been well over 7 Million downloads; because for every person there’s about 100 download copies of minecraft, with this being said, about 700,000,000 copies have been downloaded. Not even counting all the cracked servers and clients.

@lilrooph Actually, they have sold 7 million copies of the PC version. It’s confirmed by Mojang devs: https://twitter.com/Kappische/status/234907646090702848
