Misandry in videogames? Oh grow the f–k up

(This is another edition of , a weekly opinion piece column on GameFront. Check back every week for more. The opinions expressed are those of the author, and do not reflect those of GameFront.)

A recent Kickstarter project caused a bit of an outcry this week due mostly to the disproportionate backlash perpetuated against its founder. For those not in the know, Anita Sarkeesian wanted funding for a new video series, “Tropes vs. Women in Videogames.” A seemingly benign project, the series aimed to look at the tired and weary narrative tropes that developers trotted out when representing women in games. A simple idea, and one that was doing reasonably well in the funding department. Then some of those wacky hardcore male gamers got ahold of it, and did what a frightened majority does best — it attacked. Now, you can look anywhere online for a rundown of the harassment that followed — from rape and death threats to racial slurs — but the upshot is that the attacks resulted in the opposite of their intended effect, with the project now swimming in $144,501 … and only a $6,000 goal.

In response, the majority has done that other thing majorities do really well — they got jealous of the minority. Like a child that screeches for a new toy if they see another child get one, gamers in various forums and comment threads started demanding that sexism against men start getting looked at and given equal footing with sexism against women. Because of course, those born with greater privilege and advantages can definitely count their struggles as equal to those of a minority group that has to fight to be taken seriously in any avenue. In a world where rich white males are deciding what women can do with their own bodies, it’s certainly time we stopped worrying about women and started looking at what those poor, unrepresented men must suffer through.

So it is that accusations of misandry in the game industry are flying thick and fast (there’s even a snotty Kickstarter project for an opposing “Men vs. Tropes in Gaming” video series), and I think many of us in the sane quarters of the Internet are all thinking … just grow the fuck up, you whimpering little manbabies.

I am reminded of fundamentalist Christians in the American South who whine and cry about how their religion is being marginalized by those evil Muslims or sinister atheists — despite the fact that half a dozen TV channels are dedicated to their faith, there’s enough of them to vote their favorite Christian politicians into power every year, and there are lobbyists from the churches pouring millions of dollars into getting their God’s demands written into American law. Yet still, they have the fucking nerve to complain about victimization because, every now and then, someone suggests that one of their privileges — their privileges, not their rights — ought to be removed. As a resident of Mississippi (for the time being), I can only think of how the people around me lobbied and protested and cried over the building of a mosque in the local area, all because they couldn’t stand the thought of another religion having just ONE place to go an worship. Just ONE damn mosque, in a town where we have Christian churches built FACING EACH OTHER ON THE OPPOSITE SIDES OF A ROAD! To be so unaware of one’s own power while crying about weakness and victimization … I can never fathom how one becomes so compartmentalized.

So it is with these manbaby gamers trying to argue that they’re just as discriminated against as women. I’d like to know how many of these people were threatened with rape. Exactly how many gaming misandrists threatened to rape one of these poor male gamers? Definitely zero. Absolutely, positively, definitely zero. That imbalance alone makes me scoff at the idea of trying to suggest men have it just as tough as women. A woman can’t even suggest that her gender is poorly represented in games without being stalked, abused, and threatened. A man can pretty much say whatever he likes and get off with maybe a few angry comments.

Misandry as a widespread problem in the games industry just doesn’t exist. Now, I am not saying individual misandrists can’t exist. There are women that hate men irrationally, just as there are all sorts of irrational people with irrational hatreds. But an industry-wide problem, big enough to be called out? Hardly. Games are made predominantly by men, predominantly for a male audience. The executives are almost entirely men. The producers are almost entirely men. And when we’re talking about the games that are being claimed as sexist — Gears of War, Halo, titles with big burly meathead protagonists — the audience is made up of a vast majority of men (or at least boys). Now, you can call the deluge of hulking male protagonists unimaginative. You can call it a stereotype. You can even make a case for it being an issue of how men see themselves, or how companies think men want to see themselves, and suggest it is something that can be addressed. But misandry? A hateful attempt to put men down? Fuck off. It is a case of men stereotyping themselves for an audience of men that happily buy into the stereotype.

As with these Southern Christians, and as with “White Power” groups or those that claim heterophobia exists, the wails of a majority that they’re being oppressed or hated just reek of fear and jealousy. Fear that their time at the top might come to an end one day, and jealousy of anybody other than them finally getting special treatment for a change. I see these people, so used to being the powerful ones with all the attention and focus on their needs, furiously grinding their teeth at the idea of some “other” group getting the spotlight. It’s like when straight people oppose gay marriage — it boils down to something THEY have, that they don’t want some outside group to get their hands on. It’s selfish and it’s jealous. When I see this backlash against the suggestion that games could stand to be more inclusive, I see an extension of those that claim there is a “war” on marriage. I see a group of people who want something all to themselves, and will jealously guard what they have or otherwise scream oppression when someone asks they share.

Start. Fucking. Sharing.

What this reads as:
“It’s okay if one group I agree with does something, but if a group I don’t agree with does it, then it’s damn well wrong”
In this day and age, the concept of a ‘born-with-privilege’ group or gender (in your biased argument, males), is an inapplicable argument used only as a trump card when closing off an argument with someone of that group. By claiming their argument is void simply due to their race or gender, you’re being just as sexist as they are.
“rich white males are deciding what women can do with their own bodies”
Where are your sources for that one? Oh right, you don’t have any.
The woman made herself a target simply via internet publicity. Not by being a woman, not by standing up for her beliefs, not by making money – but simply via publicity. It’s something that occurs both on and off the web. I don’t agree that it’s right (it’s not), but it’s not an isolated case.

And finally, there’s absolutely no case of ‘not sharing’ here. Never has it been stated that “A woman can’t make a game for women!”. It just doesn’t happen very often. That isn’t anyone’s fault.

drfacedoctor

On June 15, 2012 at 3:17 pm

I don’t see what’s immature about pinning down the misrepresentation of both parties. Of course at its core it’s a response to Tropes vs Women, but just as that project wants to explore its own issues, so too does the Misandry in Games project, and the creators have no intention to use it as a venue for childish insults; in fact, think of it as a sister project aimed at the other end of the spectrum.

Unjust representation of genders goes both ways. Just because the male representation idealizes men, doesn’t mean the game industry doesn’t pump out the same over-the-top bald emotionless action hero. Frankly the people backing this project don’t WANT men to be mindlessly idealized or to set an unreachable standard, just as much as they don’t want women to be mindlessly sexualized.

If you really think the goals of the two groups are mutually exclusive maybe YOU should grow the up.

Yeah, because women’s social problems are more prominent than men’s, they’re the only problems that should be focused on! Men shouldn’t have anything to complain about! Nope, I’ve been told I’m going to be raped by girl gamers thrice over.

Of course, I’m certain you’ll have a kneejerk reaction and attempt to undermine the fact with various mentions about how ‘it’s not the same’ or come up with a myriad of excuses as to why -my- experiences with it don’t count or how I must be lying, but that definitely doesn’t change the fact that you’re wrong, bucko.

Congratulations for following blanket feminism that also totally undermines actual issues under the veil of ‘but these are worse’ or ‘but you have this’ as if that vilifies or exempts such issues regarding men.

It’s ironic, because “Grow the up” is what I told Anita and then she banned me, because she can’t handled other opinions, if you don’t like how women are represented in a video game, then make one. Also I don’t know if you have ever posted on youtube before, because I am assuming you haven’t but literally everyone receives death threats all the time, most people just “man up” and deal with it though instead of crying and trying to act like there is any validity behind those comments, which is something you should learn on the internet really quick, unless you are a mental baby. And since when do all men make video games, I didn’t make Halo, I didn’t make Gears of War so I can’t be stereotyping myself. Also since most video games are by men, for men then what the is the problem, make a god damn video game instead of begging for 150k to make videos that other people could make for free.

LOL at the pathetic children in this comment section. Of course ‘games journalism’ is now a problem as soon as it starts catering to viewpoints you don’t agree with from your tiny bubble universe, or pandering to your perceptions of women as sex toys and eye candy. I seriously hope you don’t tell any women in your life about these opinions.

Holllyyy man, you need to calm down
Why is equality such a bad thing? Until people are no longer defined and viewed by the role society expects of them, equality will remain a pipe dream. The creators of the indiegogo project aren’t trying to mock Anita, in fact, they aren’t even going to mention her in the videos. Believe it or not there ARE tropes against men just like there are against women.

Basically I see it like this:

Women express their opinion
140K and thousands of fans
Men express their opinion
“Oh my god sexism ing men how could they oh my god disgusting pigs.”

If we’re being honest, Misogyny doesn’t exist in videogames either. It’s just lazy writing because game publishers don’t spring for the talented people who can actually write in a believable female protagonist. Instead you get tropes because anyone with a liberal arts degree from community college can write the basic damsel in distress. No one is trying to be overtly misogynistic or hurt women’s feelings, they just want to get a check at the end of the day for ting out a couple of lines of cheesy dialogue. But then I’m trying to approach this topic rationally instead of just mindlessly siding with the side who feels victimized.

The goal is to prove that poor representations of male AND female characters are ultimately not damaging, and that the hate women receive online is a separate issue caused by seperate reasons – ie s with too much time on their hands.

Women are not a minority. They’re the majority of the population, the majority of voters and the majority of consumer spenders. I would appreciate it if feminists would stop co-opting the arguments, position and strategy of groups like blacks, s and the trans community, because your struggles are not the same, your struggles are not as severe or important and you are not a marginalized group.

On June 15, 2012 at 4:51 pm

How are the women the minority if they have $144,000 and the men have $1000? Maybe you should step back and look at the situation.

There is no one in this world more oppressed than white males. Just think about that for a second. EVERYONE on this planet is considered a minority, a victim. Someone who has been wronged and is owed something. From who? Whites, or men.

Growing up as a white male my entire life all of my teachers, the media, movies have all told me the same thing. I’m a horrible person, I hurt everyone and everything, I have nothing to be proud of and everything to be ashamed of. When I’ve been wronged because of the color of my skin, or the in my pants I am laughed at. Nobody gives a , Because I am not entitled to sympathy, as women and minorities are.

I have no special privilege. I did not come into this world with a $1,000,000 savings account. I received no special treatment. THERE IS NO WHITE PRIVILEGE. THERE IS NO MALE PRIVILEGE.

All issues and offenses should be looked into equally and not rejected because of bias.

On June 15, 2012 at 4:58 pm

Ok, some of your points make sense, while others seem to just come off as trying to “white knight.” Now let’s break it down.
1.) Is the treatment of men on the same level as the treatment of women?
No, but there are still negatives that we can work on. Looking into the negative stereotypes of male characters isn’t putting people down. It’s not inherently misogynist to talk about male problems. To suggest such a thing makes it seem like feminists don’t care about humanity in general and just want the female agenda to continue. And that can’t be true, right? Feminism is about equality, not superiority, isn’t it?

2.) The whole misandry kickstarter isn’t in the same track as those hateful comments. Trolls are gonna troll, you can’t stop that. People will say hateful things, and you’re right, there aren’t people saying nasty things, but these aren’t them. If there is any criticism on the part of the people making the kickstarter, it’s that they’re saying it doesn’t cost money, (definitely not 60,000 dollars or whatever she wants) to make videos on youtube. They’re giving all the money they don’t use (about 96% after fees and paying for rewards) to charity. What’s the woman doing “women versus tropes” gonna do with her 120,000 extra?

3.) There are some valid points that are going to be raised in the series. Why are overweight men always comic relief/morally crooked? Why are the adonisis all the good guys? Why are fathers always idiots and mothers always paragons of intellectualism?

It’s not cool lumping people in with trolls and other net-dwelling jerks just because someone is treating someone else bad. Is it terrible the way people are treating her? Absolutely! Is she innocent of any wrongdoing? no. Does having a video series talking about stereotypes against male characters going to devalue her series? Not at all.

Misandry isnt a problem? Then why can a group of women on a national show make fun of a guy who got his **** cut off and thrown in a garbage disposal for wanting a divorce and get away with it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP4VeMJp9pE

Wouldnt be as bad if EVERY woman in the audience wasnt laughing it up the entire time and it goes without saying that if a group of guys made fun of a female rape victim calling her situation “hilarious” and “quite fabulous” they would be fired and there would be a national outcry from men and women, probably calling for castration.

Sorry I applaud the guys that are doing this because at least they are doing something instead of “manning up and taking it” like most males.

“A woman can’t even suggest that her gender is poorly represented in games without being stalked, abused, and threatened. A man can pretty much say whatever he likes and get off with maybe a few angry comments.”

i like how if a woman gets a few angry comments it is considered worse then someone that represents the male group. Angry comments are angry comments. Anyone who decides to tackle an argument gets them. Who needs different point of views when you can have the one that is currently trending? You sure seem to think like that.

You seem to think that Anita was attacked with this project, yet they saw her idea and were inspired to do videos on the male characters in games and how they are represented.

She already has all three current gaming consoles, an extensive library, professional quality recording equipment, and her own studio, which you can all plainly see in her pitch. She doesn’t need 50 dollars to make these videos, never mind 6000, never mind 145000. She’s selling off stickers of trademarked Nintendo intellectual property characters as part of her pledge awards, which is illegal. When she realized the Streisand effect was making her money, she posted it all over known hives of misogyny to fan the flames and keep the controversy flowing.

It’s a borderline scam. That’s what people are finding objectionable. Nobody really cared about a one-sided documentary beating the dead horse of tired stereotypes we’ve all heard of before and moved on from. You can argue about whether women are an oppressed struggling minority or neo-feminists are just entitled gender supremacists until you’re blue in the face, and I’m sure you’ll look very progressive, but you’ll be letting the point sail over your head by a mile.

The thing being mocked and belittled here isn’t the sexism in videogames. It’s that she begged for money and sold trademarked IP to make youtube videos with no purpose but to make people feel better about their confirmation bias, and got away with it.

The level of ignorance in a lot of these comments is pretty amazing. There’s nothing in this article that’s incorrect. Some extreme examples and a bit of hyperbole, sure, those are tools every writer utilizes, but there’s nothing that’s just flat-out wrong, or even in wrong’s vicinity.

Also, I’m relatively sure every name that’s a variant of the article’s author is the same person, and that person is a massively idiotic douchebox.

I’m glad she made a truckload of money. What that should have done is let the people railing against her know just how weak/stupid/ignorant/generally wrongheaded their positions are, but instead, it just ramped up their levels of whining by an order of magnitude because they got a kick in the ballsack courtesy of a massive fundraising effort.

Using an issue such as fundamentalist persecution complexes or racial hatred as a comparison is absolutely valid. He’s taking issues we are all familiar with to provide context and parallel to the attitudes presented by the bellends shouting misandry.

He’s not saying that the issues are on equal magnitude, perhaps simple math could help make it clearer for the terminally disembrained in the audience:

Christians outnumber Muslims and atheists by a huge margin. Despite this, many christians claim persecution.

Men in the games industry outnumber women in the games industry by a huge margin. Despite this, many men are claiming misandry.

He’s equating them because they’re both cases of the majority wailing and moaning that they’re being oppressed.

Love the way that people try to undermine one another’s views by saying they live in a tiny bubble universe, or something of that kind.

Some people are s. They say to get a rise out of people. Get over it.

As for the actual project, I’m not impressed by her videos. From what I’ve seen, they consider issues from exclusively feminist viewpoints, while simultaneously assuming that all women feel the same on the issue.

Wow. The sheer level of stupidity being displayed in this article is astounding.

You honestly believe that there is no misandry in modern video games? How ignorant can you be?

“Because of course those born with greater privileges and advantages…” Are you ting me right now? All sorts of men’s issues have only been increasing in prevalence for decades! From inequality in the judicial system, lack of appropriate attention to men’s health concerns (Protop: across the board we have shorter lifespans; shocking news, this may in fact be a problem), unemployment and economic disparity, the amount of men’s deaths in warfare, the prevalence of mental retardation in men, the amount of men in the prison systems, etc. etc. Just because the wealthiest people in the world (or just the United States if you want to keep it local) are men doesn’t mean that the rest of the population are doing as well off.

“…sexism against men start getting looked at and given equal footing with sexism against women” Any why shouldn’t it? This comment perfectly encapsulates my problem with your article. Either: 1.) You are being blatantly misandrist by assuming that sexism against men shouldn’t be treated equally with that of sexism against women, or 2.) you’re implying that it is in fact a non-issue or even non-existent. So either you’re proving that misandry exists or you’re just ignorant. I’m not sure which is worse.

This article is absurd in the worst possible way.

Actually, as a project, it sure seems like they’ve been extremely motivated and inspired by the message of Tropes v. Women, and even now they’re seeing some of the same vicious backlash that Anita had received, just much more public and slightly better informed. I, personally, would like to see what they make come of this, because I can see it being easily as informative as Tropes v. Women if they put effort into it.

It’s easy to handwave gender issues and stereotyping on the male side of things because we’ve become used to a dogma that says men are the majority, that women have always been suppressed and we need to focus only on their issues. But the past hundred or more years has been focused entirely on women’s rights, and letting any group fall by the wayside because of preconcieved notions is never a good thing. To these gamers, I say thee yay.

On June 15, 2012 at 6:05 pm

“A woman can’t even suggest that her gender is poorly represented in games without being stalked, abused, and threatened. A man can pretty much say whatever he likes and get off with maybe a few angry comments.”

i like how if a woman gets a few angry comments it is considered worse then someone that represents the male group. Angry comments are angry comments. Anyone who decides to tackle an argument gets them. Who needs different points of view when you can have the one that is currently trending? You sure seem to think like that.

You seem to think that Anita was attacked with this project, yet they saw her idea and were inspired to do videos on the male characters in games and how they are represented.

“Using an issue such as fundamentalist persecution complexes or racial hatred as a comparison is absolutely valid.”

It isn’t comparable. Racists lynch people and fundamentalists try to take away rights, both of these are negative actions. That is why we think they’re bad things. People who make Indie Gogo projects create and add to the culture. They’re not taking anything away from women who think they’re treated poorly in video games.

“Christians outnumber Muslims and atheists by a huge margin. Despite this, many christians claim persecution.”

Males and females are roughly equal in the United States. Actually, females are the majority by a fairly wide margin.

“He’s equating them because they’re both cases of the majority wailing and moaning that they’re being oppressed.”

Actually, the point is exactly the opposite. Tropes vs Men is **satire**. Anita made the claim that tropes = oppression. Airskadt started the project to hold a mirror up to that and show that, yes, men are “victimized” by tropes too. If you think that women are oppressed by the video game industry, then you’ll have to explain how in a way that can stand up to scrutiny. Comparing us to racists and fundamentalists won’t cut it.

The very fact that you support the project about women in video games that have made that one woman over $100,000 in pure profit to make 12 youtube videos but berate a project about men in video games that will give every dollar raised to charity is in itself, misandry.

“Using an issue such as fundamentalist persecution complexes or racial hatred as a comparison is absolutely valid.”

No it isn’t. Racists lynch people, and fundamentalists try to take away rights. These are negative actions. That is why they are bad. A person who makes an Indie Gogo project isn’t destroying anything, and is in fact actively adding to the culture and dialogue.

“He’s not saying that the issues are on equal magnitude, perhaps simple math could help make it clearer for the terminally disembrained in the audience:”

I don’t have a rebuttal, but I’ll point out that “terminally disembrained” is a pretty ableist thing to say. The Social Justice zombies won’t be pleased with you

“Christians outnumber Muslims and atheists by a huge margin. Despite this, many christians claim persecution.”

Males and females are equal in most western countries. In fact, in the United States, females actually outnumber males by a wide margin.

“He’s equating them because they’re both cases of the majority wailing and moaning that they’re being oppressed.”

Tropes vs Men is intended as **satire**. Anita is the one who made the original claim that tropes = oppression. Airskadt’s point here is that male characters are “victimized” by tropes just as much as female characters are. If you want to argue that females are oppressed by the gaming industry, you’ll have to identify why it’s acceptable to make tropes about men and not about women in a way that can withstand honest scrutiny. Comparing us to bigots won’t help there.

I’m seeing this spammed everywhere, but not actually gone into much depth. It’s disappointing when there are articles like these that are written more as a personal blog rather than a news story. If you have actual content regarding… anything, please write on it some more, Jim Sterling.

For example, you could mention how the new project is donating all capital acquired to charity and how the “minority” project, as you put it, with over 130,000 subscribers and over 130,000USD in pure profit is pocketing the money.

Or you could discuss why these two programs have to be in competition with each other. There are misrepresentations of all races, genders and societies that are both positive and negative. The existence of one doesn’t mean that the others are invalidated. This is no paradox, Jim Sterling, but this is why I hate men in media.

Men seem to always cave to popular opinion or whatever will not get them praise. Women, on the other hand, would actually form their own opinion. Cheers.

The misandry project will be donating all the excess money to charities, all the while Anita’s most likely to pocket a few tens of thousands.

Once again, men are proving that they’re trying to make the world better, rather than whining like feminists until they get their way ( as well as $150,000). Too bad it’ll never seem to matter to anyone else; they’ll be touting Anita as a hero fighting the patriarchy, while the group sending the money to charities will be seen as nothing more than crying children.

First of all, excellently written article, this absolutely hit the nail on the head. If there’s one negative of being in the majority, it’s not feeling special, which leads to absurd concoctions, fantasies almost, of being slighted and downtrodden, just so we can feel special. It’s not only not true, it’s INCREDIBLY offensive to actual, legitimate minorities who spend every ing day of their lives being oppressed.

Second of all, good lord, 99% of the comments on this article are the most uneducated, ignorant, offensive things I’ve ever read on a website. No wonder sexism still exists in spades, and in some ways is strengthening. If you can’t even understand how women are a minority, then you don’t even deserve to communicate with other human beings. The worst kind of bigotry is the kind that doesn’t even see itself as such. It’s funny how much hate is being slung at Jim over this, and it’s funny how it’s doing nothing but confirming EVERY SINGLE THING HE SAID.

Misandry in video games is a work of parody designed to illustrate the point that even the most inconsequential and banal of issues can be completely blown out of proportion, sometimes for the sake of personal gain. If you’re not caught up in the furor of the whole thing it’s easy to see that it’s actually a big joke, just like this article and Tropes vs. Women in video games.

Videogames are a business. The devs want to appeal to their core audience. Unless we are talking about casual facebook games, women aren’t the core audience. like this happens everywhere and will continue on and I see no reason why one should cry about it. Bad choice of words, misandry. Especially if you read the kickstarter. But dear god, writer of this article, what an overreaction. Ever heard of careful analysis? This isn’t journalism, this isn’t even a weighted opinion. This is an attempt at defamation. Derogatory terms, insults and basically promoting what is know as “positive discrimination”. A contradiction in terms. There is no such thing as “positive” discrimination. There is only discrimination.

Let’s have a look at this kickstarter project. The description tells us: “I love playing video games but I’m regularly disappointed in the limited and limiting ways women are represented.”

Aha. This is about the representation of women in videogames. About how it is limited and limiting. Stereotypes and recurring patterns.

To argue that the same can not be said about male characters in videogames shows a lack of honesty and understanding of how a man feels about his presentation. Perhaps you’ve come to the conclusion that the way men are currently portrayed is perfectly normal and not at all inaccurate. And that characters like Duke Nukem and Serious Sam need to be taken with a grain of salt, and they’re all in good fun.

I tell you, nothing is less true. I find male characters in videogames to be limited and limiting. They are gun-nuts, bodybuilders, hackers or some other stereotype. They are all somehow fitness heroes with limitless stamina. And most of the time also total jerks. Even when they have some personality to them, they’re still physically impossible stereotypes. It is limited and limiting.

This article is prejudiced. You don’t know what you’re talking about but think you do. That’s very dangerous. It’s called the Dunning-Kruger effect.

On June 15, 2012 at 8:11 pm

I think misandry is certainly the wrong word for the state of male representation in video games, just like you shouldn’t call the treatment of women in videogames misogyny. Are men and women both stereotyped to all hell, shoving an “ideal” type of gender role in our face? Yes. BOTH genders are stereo typed, and sexualized. We don’t seem to view men in video games as sexualized, because society has a different view on what’s attractive for men and women, but it’s ridiculously common to have the man be the ruggedly handsome beefcake tough guy.

“There’s even a snotty Kickstarter project for an opposing “Men vs. Tropes in Gaming” video series”
I’m assuming you’re talking about this: http://www.indiegogo.com/misandryinvideogames
(Not a kickstarter, by the way, that’s some poor journalism there)
To call this “snotty” is offensive. The people behind this are being very civil about it, (although there is a little jab at Anita regarding her apparent need to raise money for her videos)*, and they intend to donate all proceeds to charity. More importantly, they make valid points in their list. The ONLY thing that one should take issue with for this entire thing is their choice of title; it should be called something along the lines of “Male stereotypes in gaming”. The people are immediately decrying it as a joke or completely stupid are no better those who oppose Anita’s own work.**

*The jab in question: “Creating videos for Youtube is hardly an expensive practice, so we feel that demanding money for what should be an altruistic venture is a morally reprehensible thing to do. Especially when there are so many great causes that DON’T get the attention and funding they deserve.”

**I’m not including the people who went on personal hate tirades here. You can’t discount a cause just because stupid people do stupid things in the name of it.

I think KrakkingKarl above me here put it excellently. Certainly read his comment.

Cool comment censorship. Once again though, in everyone’s frothy-mouthed rush to defend “minorities” (hint: women aren’t a minority), the point has sailed way over everyone’s head.

The Misandry in Videogames fundraiser is a reactionary project, but it isn’t a reaction to the fact that someone believes videogames are sexist. Nobody in their right mind would deny that a medium aimed at a 15-30 year old male demographic inherently caters to men. We all know videogames are full of useless damsels and walking eye-candy characters. It’s old news. What it is a reaction to, is the fact that someone who has all three major gaming consoles, a large library of games, their own recording studio, and professional quality recording equipment, is asking for 6 THOUSAND dollars to make youtube videos, and offering stickers using intellectual property owned by Nintendo as incentive.

Anyone with two neurons to rub together can read their pitch on indiegogo and see that the main thrust is that anyone should be able to do a documentary series like this for free. The hundred and fifty thousand dollars of revenue for Anita is all going to go straight into her pockets. These guys have gone out of their way to do the exact same thing as her in such a way as to prove that not only should it not require crowd funding, but that it should be done in a way that actually HELPS women by donating it to cancer research.

So get off your high horses and stop measuring your progressive e-peens. Nobody involved with the issue at hand cares about your stupid battle of the sexes and arguments over privilege and oppression. They’re taking issue to the fact that someone is using a noble cause to scam herself up four years of decent salary in pure revenue for nearly zero work.

So when they point out the misogyny of girls always being sex objects or damsels to be rescued, that is a righteous cause, but when someone says men are depicted as hulking behemoths who eat fire and bullets they are whiny pussies? Yeah sure, that makes sense.

Face it, there are stereotypes throughout almost every game in the industry, especially mainstream big budget titles.

Also, you might have a different outlook on “Tropes Vs. Women” if you saw it was started by FeministFrequency, a douche bag feminist who goes on and on about how men are “reinforcing the patriarchy” in media, without a single glance as to how men are portrayed.

Yes, I am probably taking this too seriously. But if that dumb can go on and on about the patriarchy reinforcing sterotypes and sexualizing women, we are well within our rights to point out the stereotypes and Misandry.

First off, the money will be going to a charity, so who gives a if people want to give their money to it.
Also, I hope you realize that you are doing the same thing as any other hateful extremist group. Have I ever been threatened with rape in an online game? Yes, actually. I took it like a joke, as most people should, and laughed it off.

I do agree with you in that misandry is not a problem in the gaming world. However, that is the only point I agree with you on.

Prove to me that misogyny is a problem in gaming. No, some 13 yr old on call of duty saying “damn, ing newb, I’m gonna rape your ass!” does not count. Neither is misogyny when a girl gets hit on by a bunch of gaming nerds…that is a fact of life and basic biology, and if you have a problem with that, talk to nature or God or whoever the it is you believe is responsible for this.

Also, thanks for stating the generalization that rich white males are deciding how women live their lives. You would have failed a basic high school writing class because of logical fallacies, but I’ll give you an A for effort buddy. No, all white males are not in cohoots trying to plot the downfall of women; in fact, I’m willing to bet that the majority of them don’t give a flying about issues like this.

What if I said “The Jews are in control of the media, and the world! They control us all”? I would be insane, and I would completely understand if people laughed at me, called me stupid, etc. You are saying the same thing, just replace “rich jews” with “rich white males”.

Good job proving that modern feminism is, and always will be, a joke. Whining is whining whether it is male or female, which is why I disapprove of both campaigns. My family has historically fought for Civil Rights and Women’s Rights; my mother was the first girl on an all boy track and field team. You know what she says when I mention modern feminism? She takes it as a joke.

ing A, Jim! I’m so honestly impressed with you. Thank you for providing some words of reason in this ed up industry, and thank God for you!

With that said, looking at masculinities within gaming from a feminist point of view strikes me as a worthwhile and interesting, although not as pressing as the project about representation of women.

But again, great article, Jim!

I don’t really see how being by men and for men changes it. It just makes it a different kind. I mean, Twilight sounds pretty misogynistic to me, yet it’s by a woman for teenage girls. Or I’m pretty sure there are people who have problems with models being bad example to young girls, but I don’t think the fashion industry is completely ruled by straight men.
The “misandry” in gaming is just the other side of the misogyny, it’s not similar in themes, but it’s related to it. Like how people talk about the “rape culture” in games like Gears of War, but what can you expect if it’s a game played by easily impressionable teenage boys and it has content like what it has? You can’t ignore stuff like this if you want to have a good look at “sexism in videogames”.

You know, its pretty rare that I feel pride in the gaming community these days. This is one of those occasions.

I don’t agree with the 4chan raids, that was beyond infantile, and I think that it can be worth examining how women are portrayed in A FANTASY setting.

But the more hardcore gamers, the ones that follow journalism and the movements of the industry, the ones that can be s at times but also caring and helpful at others, have put their feet down. Look at the comments on kotaku, and even dtoid. Not the rambling one liners from the simpletons, but the well reasoned and fleshed out ones.

Gamers are telling feminism to off, and take their whining attempts to shame them for their hobbies with them. Most other groups have buckled under the heckling attempts to shame and villify them into going with what they believe is the only right way. Yet gamers, a group consisting of people likely given their entire lives, are standing their ground. Modern feminism as an ideology isn’t used to people actually fighting back with logic and reason, and people are flipping about it.

Their only choice is to get involved and make games that appeal to them, the way the industry started out when guys were pretty much the only ones that played. If guys want to play games with boobs and blood (and objectifications of their own! Fancy that!), its no one elses place to tell them not to. Seeing as how game companies are not going to bite the hands that feed them, the ball is in the feminist’s court to do their own dirty work because the gamers have spoken.

The way I see it, you’re missing the point. Obviously, those flinging threats of rape are trolls/misogynists etc. But I would argue that this project was completely unnecessary. Yes, women are often portrayed poorly in games. But the reason is very simple. The main consumers of games are male and 15-28. They want eye-candy (Lollipop Chainsaw) and they also want strong, male protagonists, because they’re easier to identify with. The problem isn’t going to go away because you make a series of YT documentaries, something that most people would do for free.
That being said, if people want to flush their money away by donating to a pointless kickstarter project, that is their business.
All in all, this entire story is pretty pointless.

I’m ashamed to be a male when people like Jim Sterling exist. And I’m ashamed to give you more hits and comments on your page, when it’s clear that the only way you found to make some money is by being a troublemaker.

Do you know what’s wrong with Anita’s project? She’s playing it off like it’s the new thing that females are idealized in videogame. Do you know what else is wrong with Anita’s project? She might not know, I’m guessing she honestly does it to point out a legit problem with videogame industry, but her followers, be it females or males, are getting a whole twisted idea of videogames. Denying that Misandry exists IS Misandry. You are the denying us the right to defend ourself, you are denying us the right to point out that each and almost every male videogame characters is not an idealization of men, something that in reality is not utopic. Isn’t this what is driving females nuts? Knowing that there’s no way a female videogame character could exist out of a videogame? Well, it drives us mad aswell, and playing it off like they are really the only victim is Misandry.

Females do not like to be kidnapped for the tenth time in a row and then be saved by Prince Charming, but men do not like to be compared to Prince Charming, since, I’m just guessing here, none of us is capable of slaying a dragon or even put up a fight with a sword and a shield. Do you think that the scales are imbalanced? Well, if they are for YOU, they are for US aswell.

“Because of course, those born with greater privilege and advantages can definitely count their struggles as equal to those of a minority group that has to fight to be taken seriously in any avenue.”

Because a man born with a disability into a poor family is so much more “privileged” than Paris Hilton. And because women are now a “minority,” and not ~50 % of the human race.

The reason why some women may have to fight to get taken seriously is because feminists spend all day every day making women seem as ridiculous and ineffectual as possible (e.g. Ms. Feminist Frequency needs people to give her $150,000 to play video games and make YouTube videos out of them, whereas men start with nothing but FRAPS and a microphone and eventually *earn* $150,000).

“In a world where rich white males are deciding what women can do with their own bodies,it’s certainly time we stopped worrying about women and started looking at what those poor, unrepresented men must suffer through.”

Are you cool with sex selective abortion in places like China and India? You’d have to be, since women can do whatever they want with their own bodies, and it’s misogynist to say otherwise. But on the other hand, selectively aborting females seems a bit misogynist. ARA ARA, DOUSHIO???

By the way, rich white males can send other males to fight and die in wars on foreign soil, and have done so in the past. Shouldn’t men be allowed to do whatever they want with their own bodies?

“Just grow the up, you whimpering little manbabies.”

Just grow the up, you whimpering little feminists.

“As with these Southern Christians, and as with “White Power” groups or those that claim heterophobia exists, the wails of a majority that they’re being oppressed or hated just reek of fear and jealousy.”

Every possible instance of hatred, discrimination or violence against white heterosexual Christian men is always dismissed like this. As a result, the hatred, discrimination and violence keeps increasing and increasing because its existence is always denied and nothing is done to stop it (the victims are told to shut the up and check their privilege). There have recently been many racially motivated attacks against white people in the US, but the mass media has deliberately kept quiet about them. When a white couple was gangraped, tortured and murdered years ago, the media had little to say and the incident faded into obscurity soon after, despite being probably one of the most heinous crimes in the country’s history. But shoot a black man in self-defense and the whole country goes crazy. If the US was really a racist, misogynist and homophobic society where the patriarchy of white heterosexual Christian men rule over everyone with an iron fist, this state of affairs would be impossible.

If you think the white man is some God-like being that cannot ever be threatened or toppled, I suggest you take a look at South Africa, or the demographic projections of some European countries (they will become Islamic and non-white within a century, and already have many enclaves that white people better not enter without a police escort).

“It’s like when straight people oppose marriage — it boils down to something THEY have, that they don’t want some outside group to get their hands on.”

s have exactly the same marriage rights as heterosexuals.

You know, while I agree that the Misandry kickstarter is very silly, I do have some serious concerns here. Like any issue, there are serious double standards. I think it’s great that Tropes Vs Women in video games is getting attention, and look forward to seeing it… But if it has the same flavor as this article, I would be abysmally disappointed. This just feels like a very angry lash out response that shows immaturity.

Perhaps you should start sharing as well? Sexualization and stereotypes aren’t specific to one gender, nor has modern media made it a new thing. Regardless, I look forward to both video series, as someone who’s been embroiled in similar discussions with friends on my free time. I just hope that this doesn’t become a typical youtube slap fight back and forth between the two groups.

MagicSwordKing: “Christians outnumber Muslims and atheists by a huge margin. Despite this, many christians claim persecution.”

Christians are violently persecuted in many parts of the Islamic world (as in they’re beaten, murdered and raped, and their churches are burned down), and treated as second class citizens. In Europe, Christians (and Jews, and atheists, and women, and s) are being threatened by a rapidly increasing Muslim population, and all the useful idiots who enable them.

“Men in the games industry outnumber women in the games industry by a huge margin. Despite this, many men are claiming misandry.”

It’s almost certainly going to become an issue in the near future, so it’s better to start fighting back now.

Zach: “You can point to any point in human history and see that Whites/males have ruled with impunity.”

Spain was under Islamic occupation for about eight centuries. Istanbul was formerly known as Constantinople, and was at one time the capital of the Roman Empire. Vienna was once under siege by the Ottoman Empire, and who knows what would have happened if the city had fallen. Also, whites haven’t always been some kind of big happy family, Europe was ravaged by internal wars all the way up to the 20th century.

“Without question white men have had the easiest time of it and the further back in history you go the more you see us robbing power and privilege from every other race, creed, culture and the opposite sex.”

Easiest time compared to who? Do you think the Romans or Greeks were lording it over black slaves and Mexican immigrants? Do you also think there weren’t any class distinctions, and everyone was just part of Team White Male (in a society where everyone or almost everyone is “white,” and thus being white is of little consequence in much the same way that being Japanese in Japan is of little consequence)? In fact, the concept of whiteness is a very recent invention.

I also don’t think it was particularly easy to create the most powerful civilizations the world has ever known, and even what we would call modern civilization. That wasn’t just handed over to us, it took thousands of years of work to make it happen. It was not easy.

When you say Europeans were “robbing power and privilege” from everyone, you imply that nobody else was doing the same, and that whites are uniquely evil. This is, of course complete nonsense. Humans have always fought wars, conquered others, committed atrocities and imposed their will on others, and continue to do so in many parts of the world. But nowadays that’s all been wiped from the history books, and most people don’t even know there used to be something called the Ottoman Empire, or the Barbary pirates. They’re taught that all the “people of color” were living together in harmony before the white man started senselessly slaughtering and oppressing them for s and giggles.

Were our methdods uniquely evil, then? No, I don’t think so. My understanding is that Western conquest and colonization have been largely more benevolent and beneficial than most other peoples’.

As for creeds, Christianity has never tried to expand as aggressively and violently as Islam. Islam’s encounters with Buddhism have usually ended in blood and tears (for the Buddhists, of course), but I can’t think of any conflicts between Christians and Buddhists. As for misogyny, Islam wins that one too, hands down. The treatment of women in Europe was nothing like what feminists claim it was.

And finally, who do you think it was that invented human rights, liberalism, socialism, feminism, “anti-racism,” anti-colonialism, abolition etc. etc.?

Please ignore the ignorant and unfounded hatred leveled at this article. It’s a fantastic and succinct analysis of just how entitled those in the majority feel to maintaining their privilege.
MISANDRY DOES NOT EXIST. Tell me about how men are being paid less for doing the same job. Tell me that men are being blocked from having a say in men’s health issues. Tell me you can’t wear what you want becuase you’re afraid of being shamed, threatened, and hated. Tell me that the US has had 44 women presidents in a row, and your gender has yet to be the majority in any Congress in any state. Then, maybe I’ll start to listen to your cries of misandry. Stop deluding yourselves. Be honest. Stand up and tell the truth; that you want the disparity to continue, that you want to maintain your unearned privileges. Then we can being to get somewhere.

“How are the women the minority if they have $144,000 and the men have $1000? Maybe you should step back and look at the situation.”

Right, because that Kickstarter is the deciding factor of this issue. When this video reaches its Kickstarter goal, we’ve solved all issues with the portrayal of women in video games, and we’ve even by extension solved all problems with women in the workplace, all that stuff is solved now. My brain hurts even typing that.

By this logic Mr. Sterling, it must mean you got your job because of your white privilege rather than any hard work or skill set you might possess.

I also didn’t realize you were such a racist Mr. Sterling. Apparently you believe people are only successful because whites have legal privileges and minorities can never be successful unless enlightened whites such as yourself protect them and give them special privileges. GREAT ARTICLE! However, I think you should have emphasized more so about the inequalities between sexes rather than using examples regarding other issues because you’re going off topic on an already touchy issue.

To the (I assume) overwhelming males commenting, you guys don’t know inequalities. Period. You’re privileged without even realizing it and just because you haven’t assessed your worth or state of your nurture doesn’t mean your male privilege doesn’t exist, because as a female you’re treated as a victim and you live within a static dichotomy of character (virgin or slut, mother or barren womb, crazy or subservient) rather than as a dynamic individual. I don’t want children and I get weird looks or questions like I am incapable of being anything other than a vessel for another’s life. Where as, my boyfriend gets asked what adventures he wants to take in lieu of a typical future. So. . . NO, equality between men and women is not even close to coming head-to-head and though misandry does exist, it’s less of a problem than women’s issues. Another example? We live in a culture where females are taught how not to get raped or given tips on how to be less of a rape statistic; why aren’t males taught how to keep their s in their pants? Where’s the equality there?

These previous comments filled with idiocy and lack of rationale only go on to prove the validity of your words. . . except maybe without the needless comparisons, but the heart is there. And if someone, likely male and unaware of their privilege that goes beyond class and race — we’re talking about GENDER, where in developing countries women still get ultrasounds in order to abort female fetuses in favor of males or send their males to school while putting females out early in order to teach them domesticity rather than opportunity; issues with gender are both an issue for males and females because women’s rights is everyone’s rights and not just misandry and misplaced anger like the preconceived notions of third wave feminism/women’s rights. So, if anyone wants to debate me whether they have grounds of comparison then please have fun talking to the wind because you’ve got as much grounding. First of all I play a number of video games and the majority of them has strong female characters. Mass effect, Dragon age, the halo franchise, skyrim, resident evil franchise just to name a few. To say there is no positive female characters in video games is total bull. As for the irrational outcry its also bull. If you disagree with someone that’s fine but you should not threatened to rape them. Guys who over react to something like this is the same guys who never had a girlfriend in high school. Also if women want to be represented better in video games then by all means let it happen. Honestly I think both sides full of it. The male side should grow up and the female side should focus there attention on real woman issues like the increasing number of rapes in the military.

This has jack to do with video games and thus it’s kind of class-less to bring it up to support your side of this.

Sexism against anyone shouldn’t be acceptable..I mean, you’re kind of defeating your own point that people should share by not wanting to share the discouragement of sexism.

The us against them attitude doesn’t help anyone, you’re really being as big a baby as the people you’re deriding with this.

If there is no misandry in video games, there is no sexism in video games. The guy who is making misandry in video games at least makes something good, gives all the money to charity and makes the series noncomercially. Grow up, Jim Sterling.

Thumbs up, Jim!

Absolutely great article, Jim! You really hit the nail on the head.

rofl @ the large influx of mentally handicapped misandry trolls here in the comments. That misandry kickstarter is even more retarded – the only things those creeps should get are nice white jackets with sleeves on the back.

Keep up the good work, Jim, and just ignore those pathetic, whiny manbabies – they’re simply stuck at the mental age of three, and I doubt they’ll ever grow up.

Finally – while I fully agree that “Start. ing. Sharing.” would be great, “Start. Sharing. ing.” would be even better! :D

@lee: Surprisingly, people are capable of multi-tasking and sexism in video games, happens to be a “real women problem” among many! Just because there happen to be characters, who are strong female characters does not alleviate the problem of stereotyping, sexist tropes and other problematic displays. For every commander Shepard, there’s a Lollipop Chainsaw, for every Dragon Age there’s tons of sexualized and card-board deep depictions of women in Hitman, Mortal Kombat or a plain lack of fleshed out female characters. Also, with Mass Effect and Dragon Age, two of the titles you named are by Bioware and are games in which the choice of gender is optional. How many games do you know where the protagonist is per canon female? Metroid springs to mind, as does Lara Croft, but really, how have these franchises depicted their leading ladies recently? Lara Croft has been given some “sexual assault” which was – as the developers went out of their way to explain – added, to make male players want to protect her. This is horrible and problematic, to put it mildly. The Metroid reboot had its galore of problems as well. Don’t treat this, like it’s not important, because it is. In comparison, misandry in video games is neglectable.

All in all, if people are angry at how men are depicted, maybe think about what feminists are fighting for. They’re fighting for freedom from archaic gender roles and sexist stereotypes. This ALSO includes roid-raging space marines who can not convey any sort of emotion. So help us out, you’re doing yourself a favour, too.

First of all I know about stereotypes being from Kentucky and everyone thinks I am a toothless, uneducated hillbilly which of course is not true. Second of all when I hear about feminists they always talk about equality but never about men can be victims too. Thirdly dont think I some woman hating person because I grew up raised by women. Lastly there is always going to be negative stereotypes on both sides when it comes to video games, because that is what sells. As for equality I am all for that Battleaxemaiden but I ask you this. Since when the feminists started to protest the mr. universe contest. For me its a beauty pageant only less clothes.

@battleaxemaiden Hey if I wanted to look for negative stereotypes in women I just look in the local girl toy section in any store.I do support eqailty and I do know what it feel to be stereotyped being from kentucky and all. As for the mass effect and dragon age remark I was not talking about sheperd nor hawke. I was talking about the females around them which happens to be some of my favorite characters of all time. I typed this remark before but for some reason it did not go through. Also if I gave the impression that this is not a issue I’m sorry. I jsut feel that there is bigger issues out there that needs to be fixed first.

Your article is like you go to Brazil, where the black population, which is 50% of the population in Brazil, live in worse condition than whites. Then you say, “let’s only care about black people from now on”. But 40% of the population are poor whites. Less poor than blacks, but poor nonetheless.

I disagree with the word “misandry” in the other Kickstarter. But what’s wrong about analysing masculine gender roles? Of course misoginy is worse than whatever pressure men suffer, but I think it can be a pretty healthy discussion. Let’s wait and see the guys’ video. Some topics they want to discuss:

The Musclebeast: Why are all men 7 foot roided up killing machines?
Mr Emotionless McStonefaced
Cannon Fodder
The Fat Comedic Sidekick
Men Are Always The Heroic Ones: Pressuring modern day men into being heroic alpha males. This potentially sets a standard men can’t obtain.
The “Average Joe” As The Bad Guy, And The “Macho Man” As The Hero. (Granted a less harmful industry standard, but the alternatives could be extremely interesting.)
Men As Sex Symbols
Double Standards – Why is it okay to see women killing men, yet the other way around is met with criticism?
Sexuality Stereotypes or “All Men Are Flamboyant” – Or a man’s sexuality is his entire character!: At the risk of opening a whole new can of worms, it’d be nice to see sexuality expressed in a more natural, less forced manner.”

See? How bad could it be?

Omg, This article, if you can call it that, is the biggest joke I’ve had the misfortune of reading in years. To be honest it appears to be more of a ” lets attack religion, and hate the white man” article then on anything to do with gaming.
It sounds more like frothing of the mouth and lets spit out the F word to make my point, more then actual journalism. Any accredited paper or magazine would throw this article out with the morning trash.
The writer sounds like he has hate shoved so far up has backside that he cant see the light. To be honest, he sounds more like a child ranting when they don’t get there way. Saying people reek of fear and jealousy because they oppose something is just play ignorant, as is this article. Most of the statements are based not on fact, but oppinion. The opinion of what appears to be a rabid dog attacking everything it sees.
There are good and bad parts to every group, whether it be ethnic, religous or whatever. I was mugged, or at least attemped to be, by two black men. Do I hold this against the black community and start raging on all blacks because of what happened or do I let it go knowing that not all are like those two.
I’ve been hit on by homosexuals that didn’t want to take no for an answer. Should I go out now and bash every homosexual because of it?
My brothers wife cheated on him with heaven knows how many different people, used checks from closed accounts, married a wealthy man then turned around and tried to take him for half his money. Should I assume that all women are lying, cheating sluts. The answer to everything I’ve said is no. You cant base opinions on what individuals do. If we all did that, we would all have reasons to hate everyone. Nobody is without fault. Granted some are easier to spot than others but we all have them. Everyone writing here has done someone wrong and has reason for others to dislike or even hate them. Before you start spouting insults and hate to others, look in the mirror and wonder how many reasons have you given others to do the same to you.
As to the writer of this trash. Grow up, learn to expand your vocabulary, and please get a new line of work.as this one really doesn’t suit you.

Nice to see another “fair and comprehensive” article from Jim Sterling. Protectionist conservatism is abound globally and so there is definitely an element of that at play in this reactionary movement.

Still the main thrust of the “misandry in videogames” argument is that the portrayal of male characters is as marred by the cynicism of the industry as that of female characters. The misanthropic, and therefore both man and woman hating, characterizations that the amoral corporations create in their pursuit of the lowest-common denominator prove that credible humanity in games is usually sacrificed for greed. Unless this issue of amorality is addressed it seems futile to demand more from your game characters on a gender front.

What remains to be seen is the quality of both projects, Anita’s and “male roles and misandry in videogames” because ultimately the quality of the finished work should determine the value of the project…

“I’d like to know how many of these people were threatened with rape. Exactly how many gaming misandrists threatened to rape one of these poor male gamers? Definitely zero. Absolutely, positively, definitely zero.”

I betcha it’s most people on Xbox Live, rape knows no gender.

“But misandry? A hateful attempt to put men down?”

So that’s the definition we’re using? Ok great, where are the hateful attempts to put women down in the actual video games?

Those DOA girls weren’t made because the developers hate women, and neither was Peach. So where’s the misogyny?

And it’s a really cheap shot to compare these guys to white supremacists and fundamentalists, just because they disagree with you on this.

Good article, very much agreed. The only thing I’d point out is that women are not a minority group. An oppressed group? Yes. But we’re actually the majority in America, which just shows how utterly behind many creators are in terms of representing the population they ostensibly market to.

It’s hilarious to me how many commenters think that the misandry project is somehow “equal” to the “Women vs Tropes” project. Maybe that would be true if men were as oppressed as women in the gaming community or the world at large. I can’t even play some games with my mic on because I get threatened with rape, a barrage of sandwich jokes, requests for pictures of my tits, and insults about my skill level based on my gender. Men get ribbed, joked around with by their friends. Women get humiliated, and in some cases, threatened (violent threats are much more frightening/infuriating to women, who are statistically very likely to be rape/violence victims themselves), then laughed out when they find that experience too unpleasant to remain silent about.

No, this does not always happen. Yes, there are plenty of men who treat me well. But it happens, depending on the game, about eight out of ten times I log on to FPS games (higher if it’s Call of Duty, lower if it’s anything Valve). A ridiculous amount of to have to eat just to play a damned game.

For every crappy male stereotype character, there are a handful of fleshed-out, interesting, or at the very least, non-victimized or sexualized male characters. Meanwhile, my choices as a woman, while expanding in some corners of the game community, are generally limited to victimized sex object, evil sex object, regular flavor evil , punchline, or obnoxious love interest. Or maybe we’re not in a game at all. It’s dehumanizing and it creates a ty environment to play in.

In other words, there’s a lot more work to be done for women in gaming, and frankly, hardly any for men. Anyone ing about misandry in gaming is a ing baby. You already own the sandbox and all the toys, what the hell more do you want? Oh yes, you want us to go away.

Well, we’re not going anywhere. More of us play every day. Take a look at that 144 thousand dollars and kiss my fat ass.

I read the Fundraising page. It’s not a direct attack against the “tropes vs women in videgames”, nor saying men are oppressed. He mentions he sed the term misandry just because ts evocative. He even applauds Anita for her work and provides a link to her page. Did you read it?

Its men complaining that the male characters in modern games are shallow, violent, apathetic and fit into offensive tropes. Violent killing machines, fat comedic sidekick, homosexuals sexualized offensively etc etc.

In this instance, its not us vs them. Its both sides not being happy with shallow characters. It shows video games as a medium is being held to a higher artistic standard.

This is from a proud feminist by the way. Truly I would be classified as egalitarian, but I don’t think feminism is a dirty word. As long as people don’t shut down others point of view. Video games are male orientated, buts its fascinating to learn men find the tropes in video games harmful to men and women.

For anyone saying there’s misandry in video games: there isn’t.

1) It isn’t misandry. It’s wish-fulfillment. The vast majority of game creators, designers, artists, writers, etc./, are men. It’s men creating the stereotypes, the same muscular guys, the same cliche killers, etc., because that’s what they think is cool. How a ‘man’ should be, blah blah, and women are basically their things to save.

If you actually think there’s misandry out there, then it’s male culture itself that promotes it, and they have the overwhelming control of all media. They’re characters are big, buff, etc. because they’re promoting their EGOS.

And what new roles do you ‘OMG there’s misandry in games’ people want for men, then? The only roles they don’t often serve are as sidekicks or as men in distress, both of which would probably hurt the egos of most male gamers out there.

2) Male characters, as a whole, are way, way, WAY more diverse than female ones. Muscular, skinny, variety of personalities, goals, etc. Even one of the most famous male video game characters is essentially just a fat plumber.

That’s basically what the whole Women Tropes thing is about – variety and practicality of female characters. As the education, evolution, and accomplishments of the female population continues on, the call for more independent, more realistic female heroes is going to get stronger and stronger. We’re in an era where we’re leaving the silly Christan/religious ‘traditional’ images of gender and are allowing people to actually EXCEED their gender by becoming more individual.

And that’s really what it’s all about, letting young girls AND boys look up to individual, complex characters, not just mindless stereotypes.

No, no they’re not. They’re evidence that a large number of people disagree with the article and its premise. You don’t have an argument – people disagreeing with something is not, and never has been, proof that the something is correct. That’s a false positive.

Therefore, the only ignorance on display is yours and Jim’s, for you’re falling for his blatant, emotional fallacies such as the appeal to the majority and ad hominem attacks. The fact that the article begins with a picture of a baby is telling – objectivity is not possible, and therefore the article cannot be in any trusted to be factually correct.

Newsflash, Jim. Most men don’t give a damn about getting on the board of companies or into the senate. We care about ‘minor’ things like custody, medical research, trial anonymity and so forth. Men are repeatedly screwed over in these areas because it’s written into law to favour the women. If you think that’s fair and that these are just “redressing the balance” then you’re deluded and not very good at critical thinking.

Also, your comparisons are laughable, and not in a good way.

Guess i wont be doing anything with gamefront anymore if they are going to post this kind of misandry on their website.
As more women get into gaming, more feminists are trying to force their opinions on the industry. GAme companies and everyone involved in gaming are in a bit of a situation because feminism is a one sided argument group. Feminists love to judge and critisize yet feminism only produces judgement of others is not productive itself.
The game industry cannot afford non-productive elements to it so if feminism takes hold of the industry i can promise you half of the men (many women too) will just boycott or walk away from game developers that feed into feminist ideology and throw men under the bus. Feminist groups can try to make games but they wont be successful and when they are not, the feminists will judge those who do not buy into their product and claim victimhood and judge and shame others to make excuses for their failure.

while i don’t agree with everything i think some people are missing the point.. i believe there are serious problems with the way men are portrayed in not only video games but in popular culture. I have seen many people link misandry to women’s hatred of men. In this case the majority of writers, designers, programmers, and producers of games are men these are not stereotypes being perpetuated by women who are unaware that what they are producing is biased or are aware and do not care. The reverse can not be said about the stereotypes of women being portrayed in video games thus it warrents descripter misogynist. So I take issue with the use of the term misandry. If you want to talk about sexism against men in video games fine. I think this is an important issue as well, but please do not link it to a term that is generally used to describe women hating men that is not accurate.

I was and still am one of those “whiners”, and you know what? I will shut up about misandry when everyone shuts up about misogyny. Its ridiculous that sexism is regarded as a one way street. Men and the things we make and like are sexist toward women and NEVER EVER EVER EVER! Could be regarded as sexist toward men. Hell sexism toward men does not exist, thats why there is not a word that describes a hatred of the male gender.

Oh wait there is, and you know why the word exists? Because what the word describes exists! Think about it, if basket ball never existed would the word basketball have even been invented, would it be in the dictionary? Nope.

What it comes down to is the fact that I am an egalitarian who does not side with either extreme, feminism or men’s rights. I understand there are women’s issues, but I also understand there are men’s issues too. Which is more than I can say for anyone in the media as it seems everyone in the media does not have the brass balls to even think that anta sarkesian might be a *gasp!* extremist!
