Mitch Goes Hands-On with Splinter Cell: Blacklist (VIDEO)

Ubisoft’s next Splinter Cell installment, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, looks to be both a return to the franchise’s roots and a move beyond Splinter Cell: Conviction, Sam Fisher’s 2010 outing.

As Mitchell Saltzman explains in the video preview below, Conviction took Splinter Cell in a different direction from earlier games. In that title, stealthy super-agent Sam Fisher — always a consummate bad-ass — had his abilities seriously jacked up, Jack Bauer-style. The biggest gameplay addition? Fisher’s ability to “mark” targets and eliminate them quickly with super-fast, super-coordinated attacks.

As Mitch notes, Conviction gave action a front seat in the traditionally stealthy franchise. Judging from his impressions of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, however, it seems that Ubisoft is trying to dial in on a sweet spot for Fisher’s exploits, one that balances action with old-school sneakiness. Check out the video below for more info.

I was all ready to give this the benefit of the doubt and then, just as he was saying to give it it a chance, the video shows you running through a canned action sequence which, judging from the mission cue in the top corner, is most likely story driven and unavoidable.

To paraphrase Alan Partridge – “STOP GETTING SPLINTER CELL WRONG!”
