MMO Roundup 8/04/2011 — New Old Republic Video, Rift’s 4th Major Update, WoW Raises $1.9M for Japan, and More
The MMO Roundup is a weekly recurring feature where we bring you all the news from the world of massively multiplayer gaming.
Here’s some of the biggest news in the MMO world this week — and a dash of the smaller news you may find interesting — parceled out by game and delivered in snack-sized chunks:
World of Warcraft
The next World of Warcraft expansion may be titled Mists of Pandaria — at least, Blizzard has filed a trademark for that name.
As hilarious as that possibility is, that’s not all that’s funny. Apparently, WoW GMs have a good sense of humor, as one replied to a user request with a delightful “ye olde English” rendition of the Fresh Prince’s opening theme.
On a serious note, WoW raised over $1.9 million for Japan earthquake relief, all through the proceeds of the Cenarion Hatchling.
On Tuesday, August 9, a mass test will take place, and the developers are looking for over 350 people to participate, with our estimates forecasting a turnout of 480 players. Testing should last between 60 to 90 minutes and all participants will receive two million skillpoints on Singularity.
The fourth major content update for RIFT is live on North American servers. Titled “Legacy of the Fallen,” this update includes open world PvP rifts, the “Drowned Halls” 10-player raid, a new epic quest line, cross shard Looking-for-Group, and more.
From August 1-7, 2011, EverQuest 2 players can participate in the Kelethin City Festival. Adventurers who visit the City Festival will find quests, collections and rewards, many of which are city-specific. Some of the rewards available during City Festivals include food and drinks, house items, and clothing.
August updates will include audio improvements across the board, new rewards to a variety of minigames, an improved layout for the Grand Exchange, and a complete overhaul to Temple Trekking.
Battle of the Immortals
Phase 3 of Hideouts is live. The Tech Basement and 60s Retro Moonbase are now available to unlock in the C-Store.
The Old Republic
A new video has been released showcasing a play through of an early mission for Republic heroes titled “The Esseles.” Dallas Dickinson, Director of Production, walks the viewers through the video as the heroes fight their way to the bridge of a transport vessel under attack by an Imperial battlecruiser.
NEXON has launched a video and teaser website for the free-to-play action MMORPG Vindictus Europe, which will be released this autumn.
