MMORPG AdventureQuest Worlds Punishes Character Death With Ads

Things just got meta.

Rather than impose an XP penalty, or a loss of gold coins, or a lingering debuff, death in the free-to-play browser MMORPG AdventureQuest Worlds punishes players with a nine second advertisement.

Some context is in order. Previously, upon character death, players had to wait nine seconds to respawn. Rather than stare blankly at a grayed-out screen during this time, players now get to stare blankly at an ad.

CEO/Founder of Artix Entertainment, Adam Bohn, said:

For years our players scoffed at how there was no real punishment for dying in AQWorlds. So we added a fate worse than death… ads!

One of the benefits of becoming a (paying) member in AdventureQuest Worlds is the ability to turn off these Death Ads — clever.
