Modern Warfare 3 “Looking to Support Dedicated Servers” says Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling

Out at E3, our away team just walked out of a very interesting interview with Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling. In the course of the 12 minute chat (which we’ll be posting video of as soon as possible, so check back for it), the talk inevitably turned to the topic of support for Modern Warfare 3 players on the PC. Here’s how that went. Check out the video below. (Editor: Emphasis is ours)

GameFront: We have a big PC gaming community. Lots of modders, that kind of thing. Are you guys talking at all yet about what sorts of features the PC version of the game will have?

Robert Bowling: In Modern Warfare 3, I’ve been trying to reach out ot our PC guys. We had some of the [PC] guys come out to the studio a few weeks ago. We have them here. We brought them here so they can see the stuff we’re showing off. We’re putting a lot of focus there, to make sure that our PC community has all the bells and whistles. So, the guys that have the powerhouse machines, that they can crank it up and enjoy the game. It’s very important for us on the PC to make sure we have a solid min-spec base–so that the majority of our PC users can enjoy the game out-of-box, run it smooth, exactly how they expect. That’s very key for us. You’d be surprised how that can easily be overlooked. We’re making sure the PC is up and running from day one, and it’s running smooth on min-spec and beyond throughout the entire development process. As you get later on in the development cycle, you get to the point where you start focusing on PC-specific features. It’s the one platform out of Xbox 360, PS3 and PC that has specific things that go only into that version.

That stuff comes a little later. I can’t confirm anything yet, but right now we’re having conversations about dedicated servers, mod tools and post launch support. I can’t give you an answer yet on what will be included. In Modern Warfare 3 we added IWnet, which was all about matchmaking–with the plan to eventually add in dedicated servers. My ideal philosophy on the PC is to have matchmaking for the “mass.” Have matchmaking for the guys who just want to jump in, hit “play game” and start playing. But let’s not lose that dedicated core audience that wants the dedicated server experience. We’re looking at ways to incorporate that into Modern Warfare 3. We’ve been listening a lot to our PC guys who have been very vocal since Modern Warfare 2 about what they want to see come back to our versions of the franchise.

GF: So if you had your way, Modern Warfare 3 would have dedicated servers?

Robert Bowling: We’re having those discussions now. I don’t want to confirm, but we’re looking to support that as much as possible.

So, while we can’t 100% confirm that dedicated servers are headed to Modern Warfare 3, it sure looks likely. As you can guess, that makes us pretty happy, especially in light of the extra value that dedicated servers bring to a game.

I hope so, cuz I’m not gonna buy a COD game without dedicated servers anymore, MW2 was the worst game I’ve ever played on PC.

Yes of course we want dedicated servers. I am glad they are considering it. No dedis is no buy for me. It’s that simple. I like the iwnet system mostly but a hybrid with dedicated would be optimal. p2p is fine for spec-ops etc. but when its large mp matches I don’t want host migration / host advantage.

i dont know about dedicated servers… i wish you could have a mix because i liked the mw2 server system a lot…

Matchmaking isn’t balanced, host advantage is and never will be fair. Dedicated servers should be in from the off on all platforms.

This is just a poor attention seeking attempt. You’ve lost the hardcore PC players we’ll go play Battlefield.

I remember when Modern Warfare 2 game out, these same guys were telling us how much better matchmaking was than actual dedicated servers.

Then they act as if it is a huge challenge to re-implement it. Considering the game hasn’t changed at all since the first Modern Warfare, I don’t understand how this is so much of a problem.

What I do like about his comments, is while he says how he wants the PC version to be great and blah blah blah…yet he admits that only recently did they let the “PC guys” in to look around and talk about stuff. So meanwhile the game has been being programmed from the start with consoles as the focus, and when most of that work is done, THEN the “PC guys” are allowed to come in and try to do their work in a few months.

You want to win back PC gamers? How about you update your damn game instead of selling 60 dollar expansion packs, you palookas!

They have to do dedicated servers this time. It’s the only chance they have of convincing anyone with a PC to buy their slop when BF3 comes rolling into town.

…yet you dumb s probably all bought MW2.

SupremeAllah

On June 8, 2011 at 7:18 pm

“Probably” says the guy who doesn’t know!

But I did buy it, and returned it same day, unopened, just for my own personal satisfaction of letting those bastards know that somebody didn’t want their game. There may have been tens of dozens of PC users doing the exact same thing.

I would stab someone in the face to play some Soldier of Fortune 2 again.

Hell, playing co-op BLOOD or Counter-Strike 6.2 would satisfy me.

no dedicated servers and half-assed 24 player limit servers in Black Ops

I think BF3 automatically won the PC crowd.

I dont care if they support dedicated servers or not. I bought 3 months of servers for CoDBO and all I got was a headache. For the first few weeks we couldn’t find our servers because they disabled the /connect feature. The server wouldnt come up on the filters to most of the world, and the favorites feature and friends feature was broken. Once my clan DID find the server, we found out that every 3 hours or less it would crash and kick everyone off the server. We contacted gameservers and they told us it was something on treyarch, trey arch told us it was game servers. They never solved it for us during the length of the contract and never offered to give us money back or extra time. I HIGHLY doubt IW (who has a worse reputation for pc support than treyarch), who’s dedication to the PC community has been non existent after they release their last map pack, is going to produce a quality game for pc with the support it needs.

Don’t count on dedicated servers. if i was a betting man i would bet on no dedicated servers. they’re just trying to pad their PC pre-sales.

bowling is gay

On June 9, 2011 at 3:48 pm

bowling can go himself, i’ll never buy another cod game BF3 will end you you , lying cheating wankers, screwed us with MW2 and expect us all to fall for it again with the same bull story, go take a long walk off a short pier you .

Us PC guys should get what we want. Hell, call of duty started on PC and they have us to thank for the popularity of the franchise. Don’t believe Bowling and his teasing about the PC dedicated server. He’s being a puppet for Activision and they’re just trying to pad their PC pre-sales.

dude, dont beilive his lies! if your foolish enough to buy mw3 over battlefield3 then you should just go around Robert Bowling’s house and let him butt f**k you some more…

if theirs no dedicated servers for mw3 then just prey for alteriwnet to release a great rip of it :D

We shall see where they stand in November…as for me and many other PC guys I won’t touch MW3 until I see 100% confirmed Dedis and not BO steam servers. If MW3 comes out on steam forget it…I spend my money on BF3 and Deus Ex this year.

Fred

As long as Dedicated servers are brought back, and the mod tools for the competitive gamers are available on the release then that will be good. Would be nice to bring back quick scoping also as black ops was a serious let down.

Sorry. No purchase from me.

I’ve liked MW 1 a lot (COD1, 2 too), but didn’t even touch MW 2 because lack of dedicated servers and (!) because They’ve cut ‘lean’ from gameplay options – it is so stupid when you approach to the building corner and can’t lean out!(but have to get all figure out) If this features won’t be back in MW3 Me (and my friends) won’t even bother with this game.

The game runs on the heavily modified Quake 4 engine anyway (doom 3).. IDTECH4 i cant understand why dedicated servers was abolished anyway i mean come on! For the PC you need dedicated servers because of the high ping rate. If you have a server from USA dedicating servers people in USA will get 10-30 ping where as if you have it normally from hosting directly from you router your gonna get 60-150+ ping even if your in the same country. Besides… PC Versions ALWAYS get hacked and made better as in MW2 – you can download the whole thing for free and it has game browser built in, you can download Mods and run your own dedicated server with custom maps…. cant get better than that.

Plus i think that the game needs an upgrade, IDTECH 5 should be in full force now but they choose not to go with ID Software, they are idiots. They rely solely on updating the engine themselfs without no help from there ancestors. The game will very soon look outdated in a years time when RAGE comes out, (ID SOFTWARE) RAGE. IDTECH 5. – Also the ability to Lean round corners really doesn’t make it feel realistic anymore. You might as well be playing Quake 3.

Thirdly… and lastly… it needs to have a better matchmaking scheme on multiplayer. For instance, People who are level 10 non prestige are playing against people who are prestige 7. How is that fair? I think it needs a filter to go by as well so the less advantaged players and newbies can play against people who are not very good or have not played it as much as others. Its a HUGE disadvantage to play against someone who has EVERY GUN under there 10 classes. ALL PRO PERKS and everything. compared to someone who has nothing but a few standard guns and that..

TAKE NOTICE, READ THIS IW. YOUR GAME WILL SELL LIKE HOTCAKES.

so please… take notes here IW what ever you do, the community are always gonna make it better so LISTEN TO US! we know what we want. we are your customers. Take notice!

Tell this fool to go check the stats on how many people is still playing COD4MW & MW2 and then tell him to go see, think and review where they went wrong with MW2. Every night when I go gaming on pc I see COD4MW server full. Then when I go to MW2 I sit in a lobby.

COD:MW1 is and always will be the best COD ever, the only way to make a better COD would be to take MW1 and add things to it such as new engine, better graphics etc. – How ing wrong did activision get it when they removed dedicated servers, lean, LAN, using same engines and added stupid ing 2 year olds love, like uhm RC cars with a bomb. O M F G /wrists.

I bought COD 1, 2, Modern Warfare, Black Ops – I’ll never buy anything without Dedicated servers, My internet is shyte and will never get better, imagine me hosting a game, , i lose connection to steam and TS if i upload to youtube, Dedicated Servers FTW – I hate Treyarch, always preferred IW until they made the balls up with MW2 Hope IW sort out their much better more professional outfit compared to treyarch.
