Moonraker Announced As First 007 Legends Mission
In a press release issued earlier today, Activision and Eurocom announced that Moonraker, the 11 bond film (and the fourth to star Roger Moore, incidentally) would be one of the 6 playable missions making up the narrative of the upcoming Bond shooter, 007 Legends. That, my friends, is really f*cking awesome.
007 Legends is an interesting conceit; it weaves together 6 classic Bond films into a single story. Moonraker* is referred to as a level, but I suspect as the game only has 6 of them, it will involve multiple locales and essentially function as a shortened version of the film. Along with Moonraker, the only other confirmed mission is whatever happens in Skyfall, the latest Bond film due later this year. Just speculating here, I’m guessing that they’ll find a way to tie each of the episodes together under a single villain linked to Skyfall, alas SPECTRE or, perhaps the Quantum organization from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
Since there’s 6 Bond Movies, they’re probably going to want to grab at least one plot from each actor who played him, and likely they’ll want to avoid films that have already been made into games. With Moonraker starring Roger Moore and Skyfall starring Craig, that leaves Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton with one each. Of course, the only good Brosnan Bond film is Goldeneye, and that movie spawned the greatest and best Bond game ever. Even the 2011/10 remake that recast Bond as Daniel Craig was kind of awesome. Hopefully, Activision will conclude they’ve got Brosnan covered, and make room for The Living Daylights, Thunderball, and especially For Your Eyes Only, which for my money is the best Bond movie until Casino Royale came along. We’ll see soon enough. Until then, please feel free to speculate/wishlist in comments.
Incidentally, Moonraker is probably the silliest of all the Bond films – and I’m including Die Another Day in this list – but it’s also the one that most lends itself to the kind of craziness a Bond shooter thrives on. In the film, Hugo Drax, a nefarious evil capitalist living in California, comes up with a zany scheme to kill off the earth’s human population and then reseed the planet with the children of people he considers superior. These people will survive in space, while the earth is bombarded with nerve gas. Bond stops him, of course, with the help of Dr. Holly Goodhead, who then has zero G sex with him aboard an American Space Shuttle. Yeah, subtle!
007 Legends is due out this October. Here are a few screenshots to whet your appetite.
* Moonraker was also the setting of one of the better unlockable Goldeneye Maps from the classic N64 game. I can’t wait to play it extended, with what looks to be usage of audio from the original movie.
