More Instruments in Guitar Hero's Future

guitar hero news

In an effort to keep up with the Joneses – or EA’s Rock Band to be more precise – Activision’s Guitar Hero franchise will most likely be adding new or more instruments to the Guitar Hero franchise in 2008. According to industry analyst Janco, Activision could see better numbers and reap more benefits than EA since they purchased the franchise, as opposed to EA giving distribution rights to MTV and Harmonix.

“We expect Guitar Hero to follow a natural product evolution by adding additional music peripherals in calendar year 08,” said the firm, Janco. “Importantly, the Guitar Hero franchise that is developed internally and owned, offers a meaningful operating margin expansion potential versus Rock Band, which is purely a distribution deal for Electronic Arts.”

Currently, a third game is in development and due to be shown publicly in Europe at the Edinburgh International Festival later this month. I wonder what that could be? Guitar Hero: 50′s Bebop? Nothing would surprise me at this point, and even though I enjoy the games very much like the rest of the world, I am worried that they will burn us out VERY quickly on the franchise. If they were to implement more instruments into the gameplay to heighten the experience, then they better make darn sure that they can compete – if not overtake- the awesomeness that promises to be Rock Band. They will have to do more than just add some drums and keyboards – they will have to have better content and maybe something wacky like a double necked guitar controller that you can play with a faux violin bow a la Jimmy Page. Speaking of which, they need to add some Zeppelin and forego any Skynyrd in the future. Seriously.

Hopefully those who blindly bought Rock The 80s have learned a valuable lesson.

People don’t want to replace their guitar controller. However, those who are really into it don’t want a stock controller anyway. I personally want a unique customized paint job. Some of the custom paint jobs on are just amazing. I’d consider paying someone if they did a good job.

The thing about Rock Band is that that looks to be a little TOO much, y’know? Great idea and all, but there’s a limit. At least with GH, you need only get the Guitar, but you’d need a lot of (likely expensive) peripherals to reap the benefit out of RB, whilst with GH, you need only the Guitar that comes with it (admiteddly, two player can be fun).

I’m looking forward to 3. I do hope that there will be DLC, even on the Wii.

Adding more instruments to Guitar Hero would be interesting, but there’s always the problem of people demanding support for older songs. This could be easily achieved through DLC, of course, and I could think of nothing more challenging that trying to keep up with the drums on something like YYZ or Play With Me. (Which is, btw, the only worthwhile song on Rock The 80s.)

The only problem, as Joelteon above me noted, is that nobody will want to buy the peripherals needed to do drums, or vocals, or keyboard, or whatever else they decide to include in Rock Band. Cowbell, anyone?

JD, looking forward to participating in your contest but have one question first…
