Mortal Kombat 9 Announcement Trailer is Brutal, Exciting

You may have thought that Mortal Kombat short film from yesterday was a live-action trailer for an upcoming MK game, but you’d be wrong.

Today, Warner Bros. Interactive officially announced the newest iteration of Mortal Kombat, the dark-and-bloody fighting series that made “fatality” a household phrase. There’s a new trailer included with the announcement, and boy, it’s a real violent treat that takes me back to the good ole days. Video and initial details after the jump.

The new Mortal Kombat, ostensibly titled simply “Mortal Kombat,” is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PS3 by NetherRealm Studios. Series creator Ed Boon is Creative Director on the project, and described the new MK beautifully:

“This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever.”

It’s almost odd for a developer to describe a plan for an upcoming game that is so completely right on. Right? Anyway, we’ll keep an eye out for any news on this next week at E3. Here’s a list of new features planned for Mortal Kombat:

  • New graphics engine
  • Deep story mode
  • Fatalities (of course)
  • Tag-team modes
  • 2-player online co-op
