Mortal Kombat: Legacy Exceeds Five Million YouTube Views; Episode 2 Now Live

If you’ve been living in a lead bunker, you may have missed last Tuesday’s premiere of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series, which has since exceeded five million views, making it one of the most watched films on YouTube over the past week. This week’s episode is live, meaning only seven episodes remain in this anthology that brings to life the motivation behind each character’s participation in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

Our favorite blue and yellow ninjas are forthcoming, and Cyrax and Sector will be capping off the series.

Thomas Gewecke, President of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, had this to say:

Kevin Tancharoen delivered an amazing production that millions of fans around the world are enjoying. We couldn’t be more pleased with the reception it’s received. This is truly a testament to the quality of the series and the ongoing popularity of the Mortal Kombat characters and franchise.

Allen DeBevoise, Chairman and CEO, Machinima, Inc. :

The global numbers we’re seeing on ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’ rival the viewership of most cable series. The combination of Machinima’s strong network, Warner Bros.’ content and YouTube’s platform is part of the new era of video entertainment networks.

Chris Maxcy, Director of Content Partnerships at YouTube:

YouTube offers content owners the ability to reach the largest online video community on the planet. Machinima is among one of the most popular partners on YouTube because they understand how to engage this community. The impressive performance of the first episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy reaching nearly two million views in a 24 hour period demonstrates the power of both Warner Bros.’ great content and Machinima’s impressive network.

Watch Mortal Kombat: Legacy — Episode 2:

While Episode 1 failed to impress me, Episode 2 hurled a spear into my chest, shouted “Get over here!” and reeled me back in, leaving me grinning ear-to-ear at the unadulterated awesomeness. That graphic scene of the doctor (and I use the term loosely) operating on Kano’s eye socket had me squirming–but that’s what Mortal Kombat is about, dammit!

I can’t wait for Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
