Move over GTAIV, Fat Princess the Next Controversial Game

The next big controversial game to have special interest groups up in arms is none other than PSN title Fat Princess. It seems that some feminists have taken offense to the cute little capture-the-flag-style game and are vehemently condemning it.

Melissa McEwan sends a message to Sony on her the Shakesville blog, saying she’s “positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative [jerks].”

“Mighty Ponygirl” of The Feminist Gamers blog at least has a constructive suggestion for an alternative strategy to the game.

“Instead of running out into the forest to find cake to fatten up the princess with, why not go out and find gold (which is a lot heavier than cake) to stuff into a treasure chest. The more gold in the chest, the heavier it would be, and the harder it would be to carry.” She went on to say, “Oh, but that’s not as ‘cute’ as cake and fat chicks. Right.”

Not all females are taking extreme stances on Fat Princess. Abby McVay defends the game on the SlashGear technology blog arguing that the feminist bloggers are overreacting.

“It couldn’t possibly be that it’s just an innocent game and you women are just looking for the latest and greatest thing to [complain] about.”

Considering I have a house full of females at my disposal, I polled them to see if the idea behind Fat Princess got their knickers in a twist. Aside from my sister-in-law’s snickering, “My first thought was that they were fattening her up to eat her for dinner ala ‘To Serve Man’,” the general consensus is that it sounds like a fun little game. By the way, not one of them was shocked that eating too much cake could make you fat.

What are the feminists fighting for these days, the horrible treatment of women in countries like Saudi Arabia? Nope, they are taking on something far more insidious — budget indi downloadable gaming.

Yeah if it was fat prince they wouldn’t say crap and if any man got upset about it they would tell him to shut up and act like a man… double standards.

…..they do realize they’re creating all of this crap over a video game? Do they really have nothing better to do than to nag about the eating habits of a fictional video game character?

Maybe people shouldn’t be gross and fat to being with? Serves ‘em right. They should be banned from life.

Handshakes, you’re absolutely right. I can’t believe we accept Saudi Arabia as a civilized country when women can’t even leave their houses without being accompanied by a man. And they’re one of the lesser evils as far as Middle Eastern countries go.

Handisnacks: go hang out with your neo-nazi skinhead fratboy friends and beat each other with homoerotic frat paddles, you moron.

Haha, oh feminists. I don’t think they’re silly for getting upset over a game. It’s no different than a song, book, or movie, but over THIS? What’s the get upset about? Sure, it could promote a stereotype that women are fat, but if anything I’d say men have that stereotype. Also the gold idea? Terrible. I mean, then you’re saying this woman can’t even leave behind her money to be rescued.

I guess I can understand some anger over the name, but then again, we must save the princess as the opposing team feeds her more. This game has nothing to do with obesity, more with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. If they want to get over serious about the game, we all should. It would be unwise for any person to so much as to actually gain weight that rapidly without some mental disorder. Either it be a symptom of pure fright of being condemned prison of a war and the anxiety is causing her to eat an unreasonable amount of food. Or it could be a sign that she knows no when to quit when she’s had enough, a common eating disorder in most overweight/obese people today. She should consult a doctor when the war is over.

I mean come on, it’s a game, I didn’t see the community in shock over Niko’s friend, he was a walking stereotype with cliches for shoes. And like Handshakes said, well I’m putting his point out here: There are far bigger things to fight other than a game that is completely fiction and is not poking fun.

OMG if anything it would be making fun of spoiled little (or in this case fat) BRATS! NOT WOMEN IN GENERAL!!

Oh for heaven’s sake, not another “mock the feminists” article.

It’s lovely how NOBODY bothers to investigate what it is about the game that actually upset people. All they do is repeat a couple of out of context quotes, then grab some “potential rebuttal”, make some vague innuendo about how dumb girls are, and then post their news story.

LOL FEMINISTS AMIRITE?

The game is not particularly offensive to me. The game is just a game. It’s sort of cute.

The way people react to women’s opinions IS offensive.

For all of you who are whining about how dumb these overreacting girls are – what exactly is it that you think they’re overreacting about? Do you have the /vaguest idea/ what they’re actually considering to be controversial?

“Yeah if it was fat prince they wouldn’t say crap and if any man got upset about it they would tell him to shut up and act like a man… double standards.”

And you base this on what, exactly, Mustikos? Where is your evidence? Especially considering that the outcry comes from radical fat activists who most certainly would NOT have the reaction you describe?

“If it were called “Thin Princess” there would be angry blog posts, too. You can’t win…”

… Why are you saying this as if it’s strange? Do you think all women are fat, so they should only be complaining about fat characters, or what? This comment makes no sense whatsoever.

Again, I don’t have a problem with the game. I don’t think the game’s misogynistic, I think it’s cute. I am disturbed by how many people immediately respond by putting down women, though…

It’s actually a very clever game. The fatter they make the kidnapped princess, the harder it is to rescue her. Awesome.

Why feminists are all up in arms about this is beyond me but perhaps they just lack a sense of humor. It is just a game.

Go Marlins!!!!

man, they’ve been putting fat guys in games for years, and nobody cared. and i’m pretty sure the whole “pick up a fat woman and move her” thing has been done in previous games; it just wasn’t the whole game. and yeah, it is cute; that’s kind of the whole point. if it were the whole “treasure chest” idea, the game would barely stand out.

BEHOLD, THE FABLED TRIPLE POST.
and to ‘WOW’, buddylove was talking about H A N D I S N A C K S, not to be confused with H A N D S H A K E S.

Well if you look at it, it looks like it might take place back in the day, when being fat generally ment that you were rich or of royalty. Im not going to bother trying to look up which age that was, but im fairly sure its out there.

I for one cant wait to play the game.
