New AMD Chip Overclocked to Record Speeds

Team AMD FX have managed to break the world record for processor speed by overclocking an 8-core AMD FX chip to 8.429 ghz. That is super mega fast, and it beats the old world record 8.308 ghz.

What does this mean? Not a whole lot, I don’t think; the AMD FX isn’t even on the market yet, and it’s not like it would be practical to do something like this for everyday use. Still, this is nice marketing material, I would think. And it’s just a cool thing to do, because running a CPU at that speed just sounds flat-out awesome.

While this isn’t quite something you’ll be able to pull of at home probably, AMD claims you can overclock the ┬áchip to over 5 ghz using only air cooling, which sounds like a ridiculous lie. But, hey, maybe it’s true. Far be it from me to pass judgment.

people are getting 5ghz with air on the core i5 2500k cpu’s and its almost a given you’ll hit 4.6ghz with almost no problem what so ever in temp, I was running about 55c at 4.6ghz before I RMA’d it do to faulty 0core issues but we’ll see how it gos in a couple more days.
