New DOOM Confirmed, id and Bethesda Mum on Details

With the news that pre-ordering Wolfenstein: The New Order will grant you access to the DOOM beta, one question looms large: What the hell is the new DOOM?

Well, Bethesda isn’t saying. Even when we asked them point blank, they would only tell us that, “the beta is for the next DOOM game from id Software.” Today’s announcement really doesn’t answer that question either, except as it confirms that a new DOOM game is in the works, and it’s close enough to done that Bethesda feels OK about offering up beta access to it as a pre-order bonus.

Of course, you should also take that with a grain of salt, and remember that EA once offered up Battlefield 3 beta access as a Medal of Honor pre-order bonus. That beta began almost a year after the release of Medal of Honor, so there’s no timeliness guarantee here. Still, it’s encouraging that despite some high-profile departures at id, the company appears confident that the new DOOM will be with us soon enough. Wolfenstein lands on May 20, 2014, so let’s hope the DOOM beta follows close behind.

But what will the next DOOM be? Will it be DOOM 4? No one knows. So it could be the next numerical entry in the franchise, or it could be another reworking of the series, much like DOOM 3, which ignored the games that came before. With a 20 year history to draw on, the possibilities are pretty far-reaching.

Whatever it turns out to be, one thing is virtually certain – A lot of people will be interested, and it will most likely help boost pre-orders for Wolfenstein. Well played, Bethesda. Well played.
