UPDATED: New Mortal Kombat Movie Demo Escapes into the Wild

UPDATE 2: Jeri Ryan, who plays Sonya Blade in the video, tweeted this bit yesterday: “It’s not a game trailer.  Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.” So that settles that, I suppose.

UPDATE: IGN gave a holla to Jai White’s people, and they were told that “White believed the shoot was a marketing component for the game.” Hmmm.

Check this out. It’s an eight-minute short Mortal Kombat film, and it’s called “Mortal Kombat.” The question, then, has been whether this thing, which is awesome and features Michael Jai White as Jax*, is for a new movie or new game. Devin Faraci over at CHUD.com says it’s for a new movie, and Latino Review says it was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, and they both say Larnell Stovall is responsible for the fights. Stovall is a Hollywood stunt guy and fight coordinator who is gaining some notoriety for his work on the recent Undisputed III.

Faraci says the short is “proof of concept,” which is to say it exists to try to show the studio heads that the feature can be made and to convince them to shell out for it. I would hope that we can all agree that this thing should be made.

*Jai White almost played Jax in Annihilation, but instead he was pulled to play Spawn. Weird.
