New Mount & Blade “Napoleonic Wars” DLC Freed From Elba, Now Available
Ever since I discovered historical fiction author Bernard Cornwell’s sublime Sharpe series, I’ve loved the Napoleonic Wars. I even played the hell out of Empire: Total War, despite its many acknowledged flaws. This week, TaleWorlds, Paradox Interactive and Flying Squirrel Entertainment have combined to bring me the game of my dreams: the Napoleonic Wars DLC for the acclaimed title Mount & Blade: Warband.
Flying Squirrel have taken a former mod (called “Mount & Musket”), expanded the scope, and packed it full of features. Multiplayer battles can include up to 250 players; players choose from a staggering 220 different unit types — clad and armed, of course, with scrupulously accurate equipment. You can even play as historically accurate musician units, though when given a choice between a bagpipe and a blunderbuss, I don’t expect many players to opt for the former.
I do expect them to revel in the fully controllable artillery pieces — Napoleon was originally an artilleryman, after all. Trenches, barricades, and explosives will also be available to the Engineer class, providing some interesting tactical possibilities.
Check out the trailer below to see men shooting each other while wearing colorful uniforms. I’ll see you on the battlefield!
