New RAGE Patch Adds Advanced Graphics Settings, Creates New Problems For Some

An official patch for RAGE was released yesterday on Steam, adding (among other things) advanced graphics settings for PC gamers to tweak around to their hearts’ content–an omission PC gamers whined noisily about since the game‘s troubled launch earlier this week.

Using id Tech 5, RAGE was designed to automatically optimize graphics performance based on your hardware configuration. That’s exactly what PC gamers don’t want, and so it is literally by “popular demand” (the notes add) that we now have more bells and whistles to mess with in RAGE. Cool, right?

The reception to the new patch is definitely “mixed.” Some report greater performance and overall stability, while others are describing brand new problems allegedly created by the patch. This Steam forum thread is devoted to issues with the new patch, if you’re curious.

One issue I noticed myself, is it appears that the dev console cheats have been locked by the new update. This has not been confirmed by id Software or Bethesda yet (we’ve reached out for comment), but I’m not the only one who noticed. No more “god mode,” “infinite ammo” or anything like that for you.

How’s the RAGE patch working for you? Great, terrible? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Gorgeous graphics, & I can live with the questionable game play but there is definitely a little tearing which can be distracting even with the Beta drivers from NVIDIA. Hopefully they will eventually iron out the problems. I have a 2600K chip & ASUS CUII 580GTX graphics card (not overclocked)

My computer far surpasses their minimum requirements and I still get constant tearing….
Intel core i7 3.4 ghz
8 gb ram
1.5 tb hard drive space
Ati 5700 hd series 1 gb graphics card

Don’t release a game that doesn’t work Bethesda…..

To everyone that’s still having page tearing issues…

If you read the Steam forum regarding the update you will see there is a section on vsync. All I did was to force my vsync on permanently in my Radeon Control Panel and enabled Triplebuffering as well. In the game I put vsync to SMART mode. No more page tearing at all. Oh and by the way if you do add a Rageconfig.cfg file in the base directory make sure you delete the render log file it creates everytime before you start the game as well… It looks like the engine don’t like the cfg file very much , because it looks up the render log file when it starts up and if there is something forced in the cfg file thats not native to the engine , it MAY crash the game. Hope that helps a bit.

One last thing. Something strange is happening regarding the patch. After changing the texture streaming to Large in the game , my image_anisotropy changed back to 1. Push it to 16 as well as vt_maxaniso and see the difference using either via the shortcut or in the cfg file.

My Rage still won’t work. It either crashes when starting a new game or loading a game. If it does not crash, it lags terrible and the textures are screwed up. I’ve literally tried every fix and driver out there.

I give up, let them fix it. I want another patch!

I installed 11.10 driver of my AMD card, I intalled the RAGE AMD Performance driver, I placed the .cfg in the base folder, tweak the catalyst control center… STILL! the Graphical issues are there(no more tearing though, and v-sync is now ‘on’ on startup)! The load delay of textures, some graphical issues like boxes suddenly appearing, The door in the sheriff’s office entrance… etc. Now I don’t know what to do to improve it more!

Turned on vsync in the options menu to get rid off tearing issues.
Apart from a slight texture load delay, the game runs 100%.

Using Nvidia’s latest beta drivers.

What Ruan said works beautifully! I’ve been freaking out about horrible page tearing graphics (and i have a great card). I did what it says below and the game looks perf.
