NGP Might Support UMD Games as Downloads, Flash Cards

If you couldn’t tell from the specs, Sony’s PSP successor, the NGP, won’t support its predecessor’s UMD discs, but you don’t have to kiss backward compatibility goodbye (just yet).

Andriasang has a translation of Japanese tech mag Gigazine, in which a Playstation rep says that some UMD titles will be available for download through the NGP’s connection to the Playstation Store. And while the company holds patents for an external UMD reader of sorts, Sony Computer Entertainment doesn’t seem to have any plans to actually make one.

So PSP owners who have a vast library of UMD games, you’re likely SOL on backward compatibility for software you’ve already purchased. But it appears that Sony wouldn’t mind selling you those games again, this time in a flash card format that’ll work with NGP.

Sony mentioned the possibility to Gigazine, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that cards with enough storage to house whole games could be available soon. Sony might make them available with other game purchases as bonuses, but I bet it’s much more likely that if you want to play your old PSP games on a new portable, you’re going to have to pay at least half again what you paid the first time. Call me cynical — I’m still sore over my PS3 not being backward compatible.
