Ninja Gaiden 2 is Itagaki's "Swan Song" for the Series
Bad news for fans of the Ninja Gaiden series came down on gamer’s necks like an executioner’s ax this morning. This hard blow to our spirits came straight from Tomonobu Itagaki’s mouth when speaking to Kotaku at Gamer’s Day yesterday. Apparently, Ninja Gaiden 2 will be Itagaki’s swan song for the series.
Here are the sad tidings:
“Personally I think we were able to create the definitive 3D game in this series so I’m not planing on making any other games in the series. So I hope fans treat this as a swan song for the franchise. I think we were able to achieve everything we wanted with this game so anything else would be extraneous.”
As a consolation, Itagaki stated that he wants to create a game that is “totally new, completely unrelated to anything I’ve done before. Not any part of any existing franchises.” He stated that he would like to work on another type of action game or one that was “war themed” set in the Pacific Theater of WWII.
“I think the Pacific theater of World War II is a interesting topic. I think it would be cool to work with an American developer and do a game based on the Pacific Theater. I think it would be cool to do something like what Clint Eastwood is doing for that time period (“Flags Of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima”) which shows both sides of the war.”
What really makes me think this guy has a bit of Clint in him to begin with, was his next statement following Kotaku asking him when he decided to do such a title – he said it was something he came up with during the interview.
“That’s what it’s like to create something; you start from nothing and you have to clear your mind and come up with new ideas. I’m interested in that period of time, for my generation, that was an event that influenced us more than anything else. I think that would be an interesting topic to explore.”
He also went on to say that if the game Japanese WWII game was deemed “too politically charged” he might want to “explore the same issues in a game set in space”.
Itagaki is nothing if not a cowboy in his own mind, and ya gotta love that. Here’s hoping the game will indeed live up to the “swan song” description.
