When you published the top selling game of the month and which sold 2.7 million copies and and have the two best selling systems in the industry, there isn’t a whole lot of need to spin the facts. As such, Nintendo’s issued statement on the March NPDs is nothing more than a rehash of the numbers that the NPD Group released.
“Nintendo systems represented 58 percent of all video game hardware sold in March in the United States,” said Nintendo executive VP Cammie Dunaway.”We expect our momentum to continue with big upcoming game launches like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit.”
They also point out the fact that the DS has sold more than 19 million units in the US alone since it launched in November 2004, and that the Wii had three of the ten best selling games in March. This was the Wii’s best month in terms of console cycles outside of the holidays this past year (November and December), which is impressive, but begs the question: Why can’t there be this many Wii systems every month?

There probably can be now. Apparently they’ve shifted units from Europe and Japan to the US now that those markets demands are being met. I think the idea floating around that Nintendo was shorting the US market to reap higher profits in other markets is probably true. Now that those other markets are getting satisfied, there’s no reason to avoid the weak dollar any longer. I’d say it was a pretty smart decision on their part. Not only did it maximize their international profit potential, but it possibly increased demand in the US due to shortages.

To all those people who said the Wii was, “just a fad.” Kiss my ass.
