Nintendo 3DS Big Picture Coming Together
New details on Nintendo’s next handheld are pouring in everyday. The latest bit of information comes from Siliconera. Although Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said, “the final product name shall be announced in the not-so-far-away future,” Nintendo has added quite a few trademarks to its portfolio recently. In addition to 3DS and N3DS, 3DSWare and 3DSPlay hint at good things to come for the next DS incarnation whatever its final name. Just substitute Wii for 3DS and let your imagination go wild.
Now keep in mind it’s common practice for manufacturers to buy up similar trademarks to allow for potential name changes or product marketing during development, but notice the trend in those names.
Gamers got a tantalizing hint of what the 3DS may be capable of last month when Wireless Goodness broke a picture of a Nintendo DS CTR board filed with the FCC.
Although the board has since been removed, the picture reveals much about the potential of the new DS. One of the typical 4:3 ratio dual screens has been replaced by an auto-stereoscopic 3D widescreen by Sharp. I4U featured the Sharp auto-stereo 3D touchscreen in April. It’s capable of both 2D and 3D display without glasses which is something the Nintendo 3DS will feature. Throw in stereo speakers and unique three letter code, CTR and the board looks more like a new DS model.
