Nintendo ‘Not Aware’ Of Any Resident Evil 3DS Data-Deletion Issue

Yesterday came confirmation that Japanese gamers’ complaints that Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D save data cannot be deleted would affect Western gamers too. (As you can see in the photo above, taken from the game‘s manual.) This presented the annoying possibility that by this clever little restriction, Capcom had relieved the game of any possible resale value.

Naturally, speculation was widespread that this was precisely the intention of the restriction. When pressed for comment, Capcom humorously insisted to Eurogamer that this restriction wouldn’t affect resale in any substantial way. Never mind the weird assertion that Capcom has anything to do with gaming resale shops’ business decisions, ntheir statement also didn’t provide any additional information about the restriction. We reached out to both Capcom and Nintendo for further comment. So far we’ve received no response from Capcom but earlier today, Nintendo replied with a terse but straightforward statement:

“We are not aware of any technical restrictions that would prevent a game from being able to delete save data.”

While this would seem completely to undermine The Mercenaries manual, it should be noted that the statement is a tad ambiguous. Being ‘unaware’ of a restriction is not the same thing as saying that the restriction is impossible. Given the cleverly disguised non-specificity, I’m willing to guess that either it is, in fact, actually in the game and Nintendo is just playing dumb, or that there’s a work-around of some kind that cancels out any such restrictions. I don’t mean to make this a false binary choice, but to my mind (considering the statement itself), these are the most likely options.

I haven’t purchased the game but intend to give this a test-drive on my own 3DS as soon as possible. In the meantime, have any of you played the game? If so, sound off in comments and let us know your experience with this restriction.
