No Co-Op For Assassin’s Creed Because The Story’s Just Sooo Complex

AssassinsCreedLucy_1263603884_640w Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Associate Producer Jean-Francois Boivin told Videogames Daily that while the idea of co-op in Assassin’s Creed is interesting, it won’t work because “it doesn’t make sense.”

It seems the storyline is just too complex to drop a second person into the game, according to Boivin. Since Assassin’s Creed is about a guy in the present using a machine to relive his ancestors’ past, it would require the story to accommodate a whole separate present guy, a whole separate machine, and a whole separate set of ancestors.

That’s a bummer, especially seeing as the Assassin’s Creed story is awkward and dense as it is. They found a way to work in Niccolo Machiavelli and Leonardo Da Vinci, but the story’s too complex for a second player?

“Once again, you have to be smart about it and it’s a very complex universe,” Boivin said in the interview. “It’s very easy to find logic holes, and once you do you become cheap. And we’re not cheap, we want to stay true to the complexity of the universe, and I think that’s what makes Assassin’s Creed a very fine game and a very unique game, the overarching storyline of it.”

Boivin said on its face, the mechanical idea of two assassins working in tandem is a cool one, but if it won’t work in the arc of the story when Brotherhood shows up on Nov. 16, co-op won’t be included.

If there’s a good reason to hold back what could be a stellar gameplay mechanic, I guess loyalty to a game’s story is it.
