No Man’s Land Will Have The M-18!
The upcoming Battlefield 2 mod No Man’s Land takes its name and setting from the squalid trenches of WWI; when complete it will feature a vast array of period authentic weapons, settings and, probably, trench foot. First announced back in February, the last few months have seen an intermittent flow of fairly cool information for the game‘s still TBD beta release. Yesterday, however, cool went from “fairly” to “ridiculously” with the announcement of an absolutely wicked add-on; NML will include the MP-18, the first practical submachine gun ever used in combat.
A quick historical aside: Introduced by the German military right at the end of WWI (I’m too lazy to look it up, but I’m guessing Maschinenpistole is probably German for “day late, deutschmark short”), the MP was only in service for 2 years, which is why it lacks the iconic imprint of such WWI staples as Biplanes, or Spanish Flu. Then again, it served as the basis for all subsequent submachine guns through the 1960s. Think of it as the Velvet underground the to the M-14′s Elton John. The point? No Man’s Land Development Group’s decision to include the pioneering carnage device is a stroke of genius, and bodes well for the ultimate outcome of the game itself.
