No Plans to Cut the PS3 Price — in Asia, At Least

Gaming Today

Take this with a grain of salt as to its relevance in Europe and North America, but Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said last week that the company is focused on profitability — not selling more units — with the PS3 this year. As a result, a price cut is not currently in the cards.

“This year, our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability,” Oneda said, according to Physorg (via Engadget). “Our plan is not to reduce the price.”

Microsoft’s goal, on the other hand, quite clearly seems to be on getting the price lowered and getting the Xbox 360 in as many households as possible. That didn’t stop them from finally turning a profit in their Entertainment and Devices Division this past year, though. And you shouldn’t walk away with the impression that Microsoft is going to start handing out the system for free.

Both the players are deploying different strategies to reach the common target of bottom line profits.

I agree with Hekynn. I’d like a PS3, but honestly, I just don’t have the spare money right now to afford it. Especially not with all of these new games coming out that I want to play, either on 360 or PC, both of which I already own.

Considering the MS brand has zero presence over in Asia, I can see why that statement would make sense. If MS were to stand on the streets of Tokyo and give their stuff away for free, they’d go home that very night with a near full truck still ;)
