Nope, Blizzard Isn’t Working On A Console Diablo 3. For Now.
When we set out to help you decide whether to purchase Max Payne 3 or Diablo 3, we admitted our skepticism that Diablo 3 will ever be released for console. Yes, they’ve been making bedroom eyes at the concept, but I remain convinced that it will never happen, at least until they have fully exhausted the PC/Mac market for D3 players.
Enter Blizzard’s Jay Wilson, game director of Diablo 3. In a lengthy interview with Gamasutra that touched on a wide number of topics, Wilson was asked about statements Blizzard has made recently that indicate an interest in a console D3. Spoiler alert: I’m right:
Are you still experimenting and exploring the console version of Diablo III?
JW: Yeah. We haven’t officially announced it, because we’re not “experimenting.” We tell people that basically we’re experimenting, because it helps us hire people. The better people we hire, the better chance we have to actually make it. That’s why we haven’t kept it super secret, but we also haven’t confirmed it, because we’re not sure yet whether we think it will work, and whether we think we have the resources to do it.
Translation: They’re considering it, in the same way I’m considering buying a boat. No work is being expended on such a port. It’s probably one dude in an office crunching numbers at this point, the numbers being not resources the company can devote, but people who might play a console D3 who aren’t already playing it on PC or Mac. I’m officially placing this in the never going to happen category.
