North Korea Trains Hacker Army

Korea is known for two things: South Korea’s awesome population of gamers, and North Korea’s bat-shit crazy leader, Kim Jong-il (pictured above). This story involves both parties.

According to South Korean authorities, Kim Jong-il has organized an army of 30 hackers, graduates of North Korea‚Äôs “elite science universities,” to rack up virtual currency from popular South Korean online gaming sites and exchange them for cash. In a little less than two years, $6 million was allegedly raised.

The hackers are ultimately tied to a shadowy Communist Party agency known as Office 39, which gathers foreign hard currency for Mr. Kim through drug trafficking, counterfeiting, arms sales and other illicit activities.

If this weren’t reported by the New York Times, I’d have thought this was the premise to a new video game. Office 39, shadowy agencies, elite science universities… Korea is cool, man.
