Not All NGP SKUs Will Have 3G
Since Sony’s announcement of NGP (which will probably be called PSP2 at some point), people have been discussing the tech specs of the device. It’s got great screen resolution, a touch paad, dual analog sticks, and even 3G! Well, some of them have 3G.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President Andrew House has told Eurogamer that there will be multiple versions of Sony’s new handheld, and that only one of them will feature 3G.
The first thing to clarify, which I’m not sure the presentation did a perfect job of doing today, is that all of the devices will have Wi-Fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G. So the user gets a choice. Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that.
All NGP SKUs will have WiFi, just like the PSP. There’s no word yet on what 3G service will cost you, but there will be a charge, one that House says will be revealed “closer to launch.”
This really isn’t a surprise, and it might allow Sony to release different versions of the device in multiple price ranges, just like Apple has done with the iPad. Obviously, we’ll have to to wait and see.
