Not On Steam Sale: Go Buy Some Steam-less Indie Games!
I’m sure a Steam Haters Alliance exists somewhere in the known universe, but I like to think that Valve’s game distribution service is pretty popular amongst the PC Gaming Master Race.
Steam isn’t perfect, however, especially when it comes to the indie game scene. Steam Greenlight might be the most grumbled about aspect of Valve’s ecosystem, as it’s usually under fire for ignoring one game while championing another.
So what about all the indie PC games that aren’t on Steam? I’ll give you a moment to recover from the shock of that question. “Pish posh! ALL THE INDIE GAMES are on Steam, Devin!” This is not true, and there’s a new site that champions the Steam-less indie title.
NotOnSteam was started by Flippfly, the indie studio behind Race The Sun (a quality game that you should check out, by the way). The site premise is simple enough: Each game gets a YouTube video, links to purchasing options (PayPal, Amazon, etc.), and a link to its Steam Greenlight page (if applicable). If the title has a green key (see above left), then the developer will give buyers a Steam key for the title if it ever lands on the service. A green timer icon (not pictured) means the game is still in development.
The current sale is going on for another six and a half days, ending on October 9th. The games are listed in random order on the site (no favoritism), and all titles have at least a 25 percent discount, with many going for half off.
The sale has been pretty successful so far. No official sales numbers are available, but several of the titles in the sale (including Race the Sun) were greenlit on Steam today. That won’t change how these games are involved in the NotOnSteam Sale, but it does mean you’ll be seeing them on Steam very, very soon.
Flippfly is pleased to announce the “Not on Steam Sale”, a collection of indie games from around the world, all on sale for one week at a 25% or greater discount. None of these games are currently available on the Steam platform. Aaron San Filippo from Flippfly made the following statement:
“We love Steam! It makes buying games easy, and managing our game library even easier. We wanted to highlight the fact that not every great game is available on Steam, and help shine a light on a bunch of great games that many players may be missing out on.”The sale begins at 9:00am PST October 2nd, and runs for one week at http://notonsteam.com. Over 35 games are included in the sale, including “Girls Like Robots” from Popcannibal, “Six Sided Sanctuary” from poe__, and Flippfly’s own “Race The Sun”.
