Obduction, Spiritual Successor to Myst, Ready for Kickstarting
Where are victims of alien abduction taken? (Aside from the dreaded probe room, that is.)
That’s the basic question posed by Obduction (with an ‘O’) the new project from developer Rand Miller and the folks at Cyan that’s billed as the spiritual successor to Myst. Yes, that Myst. You know, one of the best-selling PC games of all time.
Cyan is playing its cards close to the vest, so all we know about Obduction at this point is its very Myst-like premise: players will find themselves in a fantastical world and left to figure things out for themselves. Expect tons of atmosphere and deliciously layered puzzles.
Or at least that’s what we’ll get if Obduction hits its $1.1 million funding goal. Cyan says it wasn’t able to convince a publisher to back the project, so it opted to spin the crowdfunding wheel. Here’s the official pitch video:
Myst, which turns 20 this year, holds a special place in my heart. I’ve got it right next to the original Syndicate and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. That’s why I immediately contributed $25 to the Obduction Kickstarter. And I’m not alone. Less than 24 hours into the campaign, Obduction already has more than 5,000 backers and nearly $250,000. Methinks this one will hit its goal quickly.
