Obsidian and Paradox Announce New Pillars of Eternity Partnership
Obsidian and Paradox will cooperate to release Pillars of Eternity.
According to a press release, the new partnership will see Paradox assuming responsibility for marketing and distribution of the game while Obsidian continues to focus its attention on wrapping up the game’s development. Obsidian’s CEO Feargus Urquhart, in turn, assured gamers that Paradox’s involvement won’t lead to any changes in Pillars of Eternity’s development.
“This game would not have happened if not for the passion and generosity of our [Kickstarter] backers, and their faith in us to create the game they wanted,” said Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart. “How we are developing Pillars of Eternity has not, and will not be, changed; we will deliver the game we promised to our backers, and we will deliver it this year. Having Paradox as a partner, with their expertise in independent games like Pillars of Eternity, lets us put all of our focus on making an incredible game.”
Paradox likewise offered its own assurances that it won’t attempt to interfere in Obsidian’s development process. “The fans backing this game—many of us included—are looking forward to a classic RPG as envisioned by the designers at Obsidian,” said Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester. “That’s exactly what they’re going to get.”
The companies’ deference to the game’s backers isn’t surprising. The game’s Kickstarter campaign raised almost $4 million deriving from a backer pool just shy of 74,000. That in mind, Obsidian offered further clarity in a forum posting where it affirmed that “every single penny raised by the community [is] going toward [the game's] development.”
Pillars of Eternity is currently set to release “by winter 2014.”
