Feargus Urquhart, CEO of developer Obsidian Entertainment, best known as one of the minds behind Fallout, Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights 2, is warning that traditional RPG developers need to look at what the MMO has to offer and aim to play on the genre’s strengths or risk losing relevancy.
In an interview with CVG, Urquhart says the keys to developing good single player games is to give the player a sense of influence over the game world.
“For example, in Mask of the Betrayer, we can make the world react more to your personal decisions than any MMO could hope to. We can let you impact your companions and the game’s NPCs – and the entire story outcome – in ways that MMOs cannot.” Urquhart says.
